    Extreme Wheel Corrosion

When removing the original tires the other day, I was surprised to find a huge amount of corrosion inside the right rear wheel. The coating just peeled off in sheets exposing the white powder beneath. Hopefully after applying bead sealer it will hold air. Has anyone seen this much corrosion on a wheel before?

While mine are not as bad as yours, I have similar issues where the powder coating has lifted and it was hell to get them to hold air. I had to sand / wire brush the areas where the bead is in order to remove as much debris as possible. With sealer it has been fine but I need new rear tires so I'll get to visit this again!

I had corrosion maybe not as bad on one wheel. I'm guessing that wheel sat flat at some time and water got inside. I cleaned the bead area up with a fiber brush on my drill and it has held air fine.

That is pretty bad. Generally it doesn't get that bad inside. I have seen outside where animals urinate on it, and it gets bad. If the bead area, where the tire must seal against the rim, is not smooth, it will have to be sanded or ground smooth so it does';t leak before you paint it.

I would get them sand blasted but that is just me.

It look like the original paint captured moisture and the corrosion got pretty out of control.

    tubes!?&@#!

When I first got my car it needed tires. Tire shop
said it"s got tubes in it. They took them out, installed
the tires, tubeless. Next morning I had four flat tires.
Took it back, pulled the tires and sanded and polished
the inner rim. Holding air fine 32 years and counting.
