Car & Driver asks designers to imagine the 2020 DeLorean

Car & Driver publishes a DeLorean-themed styling exercise in the August, 2019 issue.

"What if...DeLorean had succeeded?" is the question posed to three auto design pros with their responses shared on a single page.

Nice touch with the retro pocket calculator next to the tablet in the C&D photo spread, right?

One of the concepts looks a lot like a DeLorean that Rich W. already built!

    Enjoy:

I'm surprised they didn't show more submissions. I gave myself a similar challenge about 4 or 5 years ago when I decided to envision a second generation design. What would the 1987 DeLorean look like? I don't know if it translates well but one of my key design elements was to make the underbody more visible and incorporate it rather than hide it.

They should ask Giugiaro for his input.

One source of inspiration would be to look at Lotus. Because of the very similar basic designs, Deloreans would have evolved along similar lines. For instance, DMC had plans to build a 4 seater, Lotus eventually did build one. Just about every manufacturer has come out with an SUV, would DMC have one? How about hybrid or electric? Tesla used a Lotus platform originally.

I particularly like that you got the price down by several thousand dollars.

We moved the factory to the ghetto and are crossing parts with Will-I-am's car plant next door.

The one on the tablet is bad ass. I usually don't love these sorts of things, but that design actually really resembles the original car, but with a super-futuristic touch. That one is brilliant. I'd love to drive that.
