    Aftermarket dome light

I have one if the eBay/Jeep/whateveritis dome lights that are really nice and a perfect fit, but doesn't have the "off" function like OEM. (I didn't realize until after I bought it.)

I saw a mod where someone removed the diode and soldered a wire....anybody have details and/or an explanation of that mod?

    Thanks!

This style of dome light doesn't have a permanent off setting like the original.
The only way to get a permanent off setting would be to bend one of the contacts inside on the rocker switch. Easier said than done.

I'm trying to understand it better.

I assume that diode was done for a car that did not have diodes to make each door work like ours. It is best to short the diode so you don't drop another 0.7 volts going to your light. Some LEDs don't light well when voltage goes below 12 volts.

This is the one that needs the two contacts soldered together to make it on/auto/off?

    All others are trash.
The bezel is metal, no wiring modification required.

At $47 a pop for a dome light? I’ll buy trash first.

The early-mid 2000s VW light is great. I got mine for a couple bucks at the junkyard out of a Jetta, then painted it black. They're available on ebay, but get the wiring harness with it:

Those really do look nice. I don't know if I love the notch in the bezel on each side, but Hella is always quality. Do you by chance have any pictures of these installed in your car?
