Auto trans vs stick

CFI is right. I have always heard about 30% were automatic, and it seems like most people still look for sticks when shopping for one. However, condition is most important above all else, and it seems resale price of an auto vs. stick is not really any different. I have had this long conversation with Mike at MW when I was shopping for my car. What it boils down to is that there are more buyers looking for sticks than autos much like when they were new. I wanted a stick when I was looking and found an automatic I really wanted because I just liked the car (Ryan S's former on here). However, another buyer beat me to it, so I went with a 5 speed from DMC MW instead.

I wanted a manual but got such a good deal on my car that I wasn’t going to pass it up. Auto it is! Personally I think condition is way more important when you’re dealing with a nearly 40 year old car.

Generally speaking the 5-speeds are worth slightly more than automatics but there are those that seek out and prefer automatics either because they don't know how to drive "stick" or want an auto because they know they will be driving in a lot of traffic. Today most who want manual want paddle shifters. The manual has a little better performance than the autos and can get slightly better gas mileage. Repairs are cheaper and easier on the 5-speeds than the autos. Both have known problems but there are fixes for them. Autos are less common in the earlier cars. There are enough Deloreans for sale that if you can wait to pick a car with specific attributes, you will find one. As mentioned, condition and price often are the prime reasons for buying a particular car. A nice, clean auto is going to a better buy than a POS 5-speed.

I ended up with a manual cause it was close and cheap. Didn't know how to drive it at the time. It was absolutely a nightmare every time I got caught in metro Atlanta traffic. I don't have too much traffic where I live so I prefer manuals, especially since what killed my first car was a non-serviceable automatic.

Lol...that's only because I wasn't driving the 5-speed. My first car was a stick 3-speed auto. Current car is a 5-speed w/carb conversion & UK exhaust. There's a significant performance difference, but could be mostly due to the "hearing."
