    Thread Tapping Suggestions and Recommendations

I learned the hard way why you shouldn't use Chinese made taps: 1021191852.jpg

Anyone have a recommendation of where to find quality taps?

Also has anyone tried aluminium brazing rods to fill holes? I plan on filling one of the bolt holes for the intake manifold and retapping from scratch.

You are SO LUCKY you got it out easily! You don't braze the holes. You drill it out to a larger size, tap it, screw a bolt in and then cut it off flush. Or you get a threaded insert, drill, tap, and install that. Any good machinist supply should be able to get you a quality set of drills and taps.

A quality tap is so much better but when tapping aluminum you need to just thread a little and keep backing the tap out to remove the chips. It's really bad with soft aluminum (no alloys). Get two flute taps which let the chips build up more before you have to back it out. I use AlumTap but you still have to keep backing out the tap.

Only was easy after I bought a tap extractor tool:

2 flute is preferable to 4. Got it, thanks

Is this for one of the bolts that secure the manifold to the heads?

Sounds like you might need a 7mm HeliCoil Kit. Any auto parts store should be able to get you one.

Yes i'm talking about those. The hole my tap broke off in had already been outsized to 8mm. I probably will need a HeliCoil to get it torqued down properly, the threads are a mess. Just need to buy a tap that isn't junk.

McMaster-carr has pretty good quality taps for a reasonable price:

As already mentioned, tapping aluminum can be a little tricky so use plenty of oil and back out the tap frequently to remove the chips. I've used cheaper Chinese / harbor freight taps and the quality on those is hit or miss as you've already discovered. Hope you have better luck with a higher quality tap.

If you buy an insert kit, it comes with a good quality drill, tap, inserts, and an insert tool.

I'm planning to do this soon, and researching thread repair options. I recently watched this:
