Can anyone tell me if I need to drain all of the coolant prior to swapping out the hot water valve? Or can I just swap it out and burp the system?

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy a DeLorean and that's sort of the same thing....

If you don't mind spilling a little, you do not have to drain the whole system. You could use locking pliers (visegrip) to clamp off the hoses but there is not a whole lot of room to work. If your coolant is over 5 years old just flush the old stuff out and refill with fresh.
