There is nothing that breaks down DOT 5. It must be removed mechanically with brushes. Try flushing with alcohol and follow that with trying to push a wire through with a small rag attached.

If you still have the plastic line just replace it with a S/S braided line. You also have to clean the master and slave cylinders and that will require taking them apart. It is a real pain in the a-- to get rid of the DOT 5. One of the reasons it is not recommended unless you have no other choice like certain classes in racing or a manufacturer spec. As for taking the the line out, it is a whole lot easier to do than a brake line!
