    Pulling Relays

When pulling your relays with a metal tool, make sure you disconnect the battery first. Many relays have battery connections always powered and sticking a screw driver or similar tool under the relay can be very bad.

With my solid state relays I also have some solder pads driving signals to the upper circuit board that can be damaged connecting that battery voltage to those pads.

I got a returned fan relay and the ground trace was blown open on the lower circuit board. I jumpered that open trace and the relay then worked as designed.

I keep a bicycle tire tool in my box for those very types of jobs where a non conductive pry tool is needed.

If it's electrical or fuel-related work being done, always disconnect the battery. Just a simple thing that takes 30-seconds and saves a whole lot of hassle, danger to damage parts, or potential injury.

I must admit I've pulled relays without disconnecting the battery but my relay pulling tool is safe for that but now that I have a battery disconnect I do use it with any electrical work.

    Hi Dave,

Can you recommend a good battery disconnect and maybe post a couple of photos of where you mounted it and spliced it in?

Here is my thread on what I did. I think Toby is selling something similar now.

I’m using a manual switch like this I got from John Hervey. Mounted to the battery cover, so all I have to do is reach behind the passenger seat to kill it.

I got inspired by Dave's latching battery disconnect and took a different approach for the mounting:
