The front latch seems to be the most finicky when it comes to weird locking issues. Some of us have removed the front latch lock rod in order to prevent that lock from misbehaving.
It’s also possible that the latch itself has failed, or some part of the latch/lock mechanism is broken. They do wear out.
So if you remove the rod, do you tie the lock mechanism back? The rear lock will work as normal? If you try to open the door from the outside, does the handle not respond?

You can tie the mechanism back if you’d like. It’s easy enough to do. The rear lock will work as normal, as it has nothing to do with the front lock. Both inside and outside handles respond as normal.
