The wife glass bead blasted parts, primed, and painted them while I was working on this stuff.

I removed these little straps for now. I may replace them with some black plastic 1 hole clips

As part of the "While you're in there" protocol I inspected the wiring that is normally inaccessible. Low and behold what do I find? Melted wiring 🫤
I stripped back the wrap to see how far the damage went. Luckily it is very isolated. I should be able to just replace two 3" sections of wiring or perhaps just remove the pins from the connector, put heat shrink over the two wires, and pop the pins back in. The next question...why did these wires melt? I think I may have figured this out. This is the power feed to the engine compartment light and light switch. The light switch was all messed up on the car so that is probably what happened.

I wanted to remove these hinges for reconditioning, but this is easier said than done. You need to remove the upper trim piece. Easy enough right? Nope. You can't remove this without remove the side interior panels. These are in bad shape in a lot of the cars that I have seen but ours are not so I am not too keen on trying to remove them. Anyone know a way to safely get to these nuts with breaking something?

I cleaned up the pontoons/engine bay with simple green and cleaning wipes. During this I discovered some cracks near the left engine cover hinge. I am wondering what would have caused this. Maybe the hinge was siezed at one point and someone pried the cover open. I am not too worried about this since the car is frame-on-body construction. The tub is not structural. There should be too much if any water getting into this area..I mean heck...we will probably never even drive the car in the rain.

I tested armor all on the left side. It's hard to tell from the picture but it didn't look that great after. Better than it looked before but still pretty rough. I tried Restore To Black on the right side. This side came out shiny which was nice but left a weird pattern on it.

I tried to clean up the firewall with no luck. It looks like someone tried to spruce up the engine bay with spray paint at some point and it doesn't want to come off.
Unfortunately I think we are going to have to prep and paint the engine bay. Ugh....

Yes. I recently replaced my original hinges and I put a tiny bit of PB blaster on the threads. The nuts came off no problem. Another tip: Reinstalling the plastic rear board with the dome light in the car is a PITA with screws so I installed studs (M6 i think) in the holes. This way I can put the board in with cargo net clips, then push it back and install the nuts on the studs.

So do the side trim pieces both need to be removed to get this panel to come out?

No, they don't. There is enough flex to remove the part without taking the sides off.
