I decided to tip the engine and transmission on its side and pour diesel into the transmission and let it soak over night (or longer). I will drain it out before taking the transmission apart. My hope is that it will wash away the 80-90 lube so we don't have a sticky mess to deal with.

I kinda whent down a rabbit hole recently and I found the little screens in a gasket kit for the Volvo 264 engine which are similar.

The kit I saw was on Rockauto and out of stock.
I guess my point is that this isn't a Delorean thing and can be found. Separate from a kit I'm not sure of.

I was told by several "experts" to not install them so I left them out. The holes are meant to be there so oil can get through when the oil is cold or if the screen gets plugged.

I wouldn't either, just thought it was a interesting find.
I'm sure at the time they thought it would do some good.
Not knowing it would fail right away. Luckily it's one of those good idea things that wasn't necessary.

I have those odds lots of times. I generally always follow the OP in my choice too.

We received the pull scale thingy in the mail. Not fully convinced I need to use this but whatever it was cheap.

Today we spent 6 hours working on the transmission rebuild mess up.
Since we had done all this before I let the wife take the lead. Original I was going to do a YouTube video of the whole thing but I ended up forgetting to film after a while.
First thing she did was remove the starter, the transmission mounts, etc.
Then the transmission was removed from the engine...again.

With the transmission split open it was proven that the leaking was due to a section that we missed when sealing up the case. Actually there was a second area that we missed also.

I sanded the bearing retainer compound off from the bearing races and bearing seats in the cases. What a pain.
