    No, they are fired in pairs according to the firing order, at least with Megasquirt. One cylinder is fired to ignite while the other cylinder coil is fired "wasted".

    If you have one tooth wheel on the main crank, the ECU knows when it's on TDC but does not know if it's on TDC of cyl 1 or cyl 6, so it fires them both and so on. If you have a trigger wheel on the main crank AND on the cam, then it will know exactly where TDC 1 and 6 is and you can then fire sequentially.
