This isn't exactly true. The engines and transmissions were documented. How accurate are the documents I don't know I really never bothered to check. But it seems that this numbers matching thing doesn't affect the Delorean.



I'm referring too the documents you can order from DMCH.

DMCH had a card file on some of the early Deloreans. In some cases they had engine #'s, frame #'s, key codes, and vins. There is not much documentation that can tie things together. On most cars of the era (not Deloreans) part of the vin is stamped into the motor or the motor s/n is stamped on a data plate somewhere on the car. It was also "standard practice" to stamp the VIN number in a hidden place so if the car was stolen and the vin plates tampered with, they could find the hidden vin to identify the car. Again, not Deloreans. The only places you will find a vin # is the body plate in the driver's door jamb and the dash vin plate. Those numbers and the one on your Title and registration should ALL be exactly the same. In Delorean World there is no such thing as a "matching numbers" car.
