Maybe or maybe not a joke.
An article from a San Antonio news source on 4-Jan-24 says it wasn't a joke. It suggests it's more likely poor execution (a goof-up) by Pepsi or DMR. It further quotes Pepsi saying it might still happen.
It includes a link to a story relating DMR's 2023 setbacks, adjustments and upheavals including the quiet resignation of CEO de Vries last October.
On the topic of DMR setbacks, to kick off 2024 they requested the termination of their deal for a 10-year $1 million local tax break, the terms of which they say they no longer can meet. The county board approved DMR's termination request without comment yesterday according to this Texas Public Radio story.

Same ole story. The boy who cried wolf.
There is a writer for "The Current" who has a hard on for the BS that has been spewed out of the new DeLorean factory. He knows none of this adds up and I hope his narrative goes mainstream very soon. Lot of honest buyers got left hanging with non refundable deposits.
Imagine the gas station conversation getting flipped from, “Is this one of the new ones? I read that the factory’s making new ones” to “DeLorean? Thats’s weird, I heard that this company failed before any cars were made”

A few people in a delorean group on FB indicated it was for an "invite only" event with Pepsi and DMC. Then I heard it got cancelled so who knows.
