Exhaust Recommendations

Planning on removing stock exhaust within the month in favor of a new setup (PM me if youre interested in any old stuff Im removing). Heres the basic plot for the new setup:

- Stainless headers, stainless studs, brass nuts
- No cats (car is antique status, no emissions)
- Each header routing direct to separate mufflers
- Prefer bolt on for easy removal if necessary (future work, etc) but open to welding
- All of this is similar to Brice Palustran?s setup (see pic)

Id like to have the quietest, shortest muffler possible, oval or round. Prefer stainless but not opposed to aluminized if necessary (I don?t drive in the rain, plus it?s always garaged). Deeper tone preferred. Open to resonator tips and/or silencers.

Any experience with a setup like this or specific products that you found that fit the bill I?d be much obliged!

Careful, if you run without cats your car will stink both hot and cold. High flow cats like DPI has will nearly eliminate exhaust odor and still run freely which I expect is what you're after. Not sure about you but clothing stinking like exhaust gets old not just for you but other people around you too.

Forget the aluminized. It will rust even if it's garaged when not in use. I know too well about this after 25 years in the business. DPI and done.

Not sure about you but clothing stinking like exhaust gets old not just for you but other people around you too.

Now everyones sense of smell is different. Diesel makes me sick.
I'm not running cats on my D and I don't think it's that bad.
You'll smell it mostly until it warms up or in a enclosed space. Now if you don't know the smell you haven't spent a lot of time around classic cars because it doesn't smell that different. Plus I driven by many groups of cops and they never said a thing about the smell or sound.
I also don't live where they check emissions.

I agree. My CAT is hollow and I don't think it smells.

It won't smell bad, the smell reminds me of my Mode T.

I'm a member of the hollow CAT club; the smell is most noticeable upon cold start, lasts longer when it is cooler outside (for obvious reasons) and is amplified by running in an enclosed space. Once the engine is up to operating temperature, I find it to be negligibly different compared to a car with a functional CAT. Where I live vintage vehicles are exempt from emissions testing. My .02 worth, your results may vary.

If your car smells bad it could be an oil leak dripping onto the exhaust or maybe you are in open loop and/or running too rich. For it's time, the K-Jet fuel system in the Delorean had very low emissions numbers especially when compared to other cars of the era. As for noise, even hollowed out cats are good enough to keep the car from getting too noisy. The early turbo cars didn't have cats, only small mufflers, and they were not very noisy.
