Anyone remember how hellish the US was in the 70's?
46 Photos
More than 100 photographers were hired not only to document specific environmental issues, but to capture images of everyday life, showing how we interacted with the environment and capturing the way parts of America looked at that moment in history. By 1974, more than 80,000 photographs had been produced.
The National Archives has made 15,000 of these images available, and I've spent much of the past week combing through those to bring you these 46 glimpses of America in the early 1970s, with an eye toward our then-ailing environment.

Thank you Nixon, Ford, and Carter (Those before you bear some blame also).

Amazing pictures. I can't help but wonder how we will look back at our previous decade 30 years from now.

I know exactly where that photograph of Vegas is down on Fremont Street. It hasn't improved with age.

The nasty pond with cars in it next to the train tracks isn't too far from me, although it has been cleaned up years ago. You'd never guess that it used to look like that if you saw it today. It's hard to believe that some companies or people used to be so careless. Things are much better around here now.
