Last night I was taking out the trash and a neighbor of mine asked "So, how long until your car's done?"
"Oh, it'll never be done," I said. "It's 32 years old. Old cars are never done!"
We both had a little chuckle.
Although it was a jocular remark, on reflection I think there's more truth to that statement than I had the notion of at the time. I don't have unlimited money to spend on the car, but if I did I probably would still be doing things to it and it would never be "done." I am constantly thinking of things to improve, change, or add in the future. Meanwhile, the vendors in our community continue to come up with innovations to improve the DeLorean experience. There are owners who bought their DeLoreans brand new, and although they may have driven them pretty much unchanged for years and were happy, they are taking advantages of new upgrades and parts previously unavailable, etc.
But to enlarge the question: is any DeLorean ever "done"? The only time I think I could answer "yes" would be if I were readying one for a museum display or making it "concours original."
Just some thoughts over my extended coffee break.
3.0L, automatic, carbureted
I finally got around to taking my car to its first cruise in after having it for a couple of years. I will admit that the unwitting over-valuing of our cars is always a little flattering to me while the unwitting under-valuing is always a little insulting to me, but I always take it in stride.
While at the cruise in a kid pulled up in what he had brought and was floored that he had parked next to a delorean.
Him: that yours?
Me: yup
Him: man, that's nice, I've seen those for a lot, they're worth what like $100,000 right?
Me: thanks man, preciate it.
(What I wanted to say but didnt) It IS my friend! But, for you, today only, I will part with it for 90k.
Why didnt I respond with that you ask? Because I was busy making friends with the guy on the other side of me who was knowledgeable about the car and who came in his Lotus and has a Ferrari at home
