Hey that sounds like a great trip! May I recommend you have alternate routes in case of inclimate weather though? I know you're in Alaska and used to driving it bad weather, but I'd hate to see you get in a wreck or stuck in a ditch because a Midwest snow storm. I'd ride along the California coast line then cut across to the Grand Canyon, ride some route 66 for a bit. Granted I've never been to CA, but in the movies that road that runs alongside the ocean never has any traffic and always looks so gorgeous (and curvy)!

The coast highway is amazing for sure! But the D will be a very tight squeeze on those roads - the the thing they never show you on tv is the people on bikes who you can't see til after you've almost killed them. Take it slow on those sections and you'll be fine!
Take a pass through the Sonoma valley - there are lots of us up here, we could meet you somewhere.
