I have decided to make one of these in roughly 3' x 1.5' size. Going to the art store this weekend to search for a frame large and deep enough...everything else will be easy.

No-one is to stone anyone, even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say "carburetor"

I love, love, LOVE these signs - but man - $825 for a sigh - oof.

It will be nice when I make 1st Lt. Then I can buy these kinds of fun toys .

Don't get me wrong though; I do want one.

Me: Eddie, I can't wait to get the car back when you're done with it.

Eddie: Yeah, you'll be able to give the car gas, and it won't be - like - embarrassing....

I dunno about you guys, but my interest in this was rekindled by the original dealer sign's appearance on American Pickers tonight... now my wife thinks $925 for this is a deal. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I am in the finishing stages of my wife's birthday present, (Ohh I will definitely show it off here) and then I have to finish my Millennium Falcon model. By mid September I will start building my own sign. After my research, I can't believe how simple these are going to be to make. The only hard part is building the frame. I am still looking for a frame that is pre constructed from metal but it looks like I will have to make my own at this point. The good news is that it will have user programmable/selectable colors to choose from, not just white.

So odd that you asked, now that the falcon is finished I am going ahead with this project. I actually finished my falcon a bit late to make an illuminated art piece for my wife, took longer than expected, but I learned a lot about the lights which will help me on my sign.

I was just at Walmart looking at poster frames yesterday. I found the right size but nowhere near deep enough. I didn't want to have to build my own frame because I would have to do it with wood, and its hard to get a modern finish from wood. I am going to search online later today for the right size frame. I need to find something approx. 4' x 1.5' that's about 4" deep. Once that is done the rest is gravy. My best bet to find something pre made is a shadow box, but that's a odd size for something not custom, and I am setting a budget at 200.00, maybe 250.00 tops for this entire thing.

Here is what gave me such a fit with lights, it would seem that when you use long runs of lights, the power source has to be divided and modulated carefully. I used two different runs to allow complete user selectable colors and brightness levels. This way it matches any room or season, for instance I can make them red and green for a upcoming Christmas party. Anyway, I am going to do the same thing with the DMC sign, instead of just one color, why not give myself a choice? I may document the construction process and if I do I will start a thread here in the near future.
