This may not be the answer/solution. Building a network with volunteer work may lead to employment as well. Targeting an industry / profession and working out how to get in or what is needed to make it happen.

Rejoice, Karin: "geek" is the new hotness. Hollywood is 15 years behind the real world. I always considered myself a geek and was pretty much an outcast (but for my musical talent) in school. Suddenly it was 2005 and I was attractive. My girlfriend is also a geek, or "nerd" as she would put it. So it goes to show that you really never know.
