It was a salvage car after the commercial guys were done with it. I think they bought it just to do that to it. I asked about it when it went up for sale. They said it isn't sand, it is spray foam stuck in everything.

+1. if you look closely at the photos i posted of the aftermath, you can see some areas (interior especially) where the 'sand' appears to be chipping or flaking off. they obviously used something to adhere the sand to the vertical surfaces and areas where it didnt 'want to be.'
