Where did you get the crank seal? Mount it flush. I replaced mine twice because I messed it up the first time!

It's not critical as long as it is in the hole square. If you have a groove worn in the pulley, either sleeve the pulley, or make a measurement and set the seal so that it misses the groove.
Just don't push it out the back. That will ruin your day. There is no back stop.
