Did you ever figure out what this noise was? My car is now having a similar problem, and I can't isolate where the whine is coming from.

Has anyone considered the differential/final drive as the culprit? The whine pitch on the final drive will tether with the throttle and downshifting.

If you suspect the noise is coming from the final drive the very first thing to do is check the fluid level. If it whines even when full of fluid you probably have to reset the pre-load on the carrier bearings. To do it right it has to come out.
