Porsche 911 / 997 exhaust on a Delorean?
Ever been done? Any results on that?
One thing I hate on the rear look of a D are those round muffler tips on such a lovely square car. And one thing I loved on my 1971 Stingray, was the square tips it had right under its "L" shaped rear bumpers.
But aside aesthetics, replacing muffler tips are an easy task. I am looking to get me the Porsche exhaust set and attach it to my D manifold. The rear engined Porsche's have their manifolds exit under the boxer engine. A stainless adapter to reach the D manifold should not be a problem.
I am looking for better sound and horsepower increase.
What other technical difficulties do you see in such a replacement?

I think you'd be better off getting a set of DeLorean headers instead of trying to use the stock manifold. There's no way come from the Delorean manifold around to the Porsche exhaust without some severely restrictive bends and even then I'm not sure there's a space to do it. I know there was something homemade that came through the suspension on either side of the engine cradle. I can't say I was a fan of it.
I say ditch the stock manifolds, get some headers, and then built an intermediary pipe to go from the headers to the Porsche exhaust. It'd be the fastest, easiest, and best looking route.

Well, I have a 1972 Corvette, and as you know, they were not really rectangle, it was just a clamp on box to the round pipe. You could do that to the Stage 1 Exhaust, with Stainless Steel Headders, Cats and round pipes. I put the Stage 1 on mine, and It SOUNDS great, and I am sure there is as good of HP gain as you would get with the Porsche. Also I REALLY like the DMC etched into the top of the nice short, angled chrome exhaust pipes.

Were there any 80s cars with genuine square / polyagonal exhausts? I don't remember seeing those until the mid 90s.

Points take thanx guys!
Thing is, that a stage I exhaust goes what ? $1500 to $2000??
A used Porsche complete system, with low miles on it can be found between $600 to $1000 with cats and lambda on it.
Here is the 71 and 72 corvette mufflers. As well said, they were just a tip not welded on the exhaust.
But I defo want to go with a square look. Sorry John Z....

I mocked up some rectangular tips when at the shop getting my exhaust done. Sorry, I didn't take pics at the time, but they looked out of place with the stock round cutouts in the bumper.
Although I think they would look good if you rectangular-shaped cutouts as well.
Definitely get rid of the stock manifolds if you can. Bear in mind that the porsche system will probably require some work to fit, whereas the vendor DeLorean systems should be a direct fit replacement.

From the actual design/engineering/retrofit standpoint, the first question in my mind is what is the spacing of the exhaust ports on the Porsche compared to the DeLorean?? If they're not almost exactly the same, you stock manifolds will be better than the Porsche headers. Next is that the bolt pattern on those headers is way different than the DeLorean. Each port has 3 mounting holes in a triangular shape where the DeLorean's engine head has 4 mounting points for each port and they're in a rectangular pattern. Lastly that muffler looks thicker than the DeLoreans muffler and space is already tight.
Still, where can you get a full Porsche 911 or 997 exhaust for $600-$1000? Porsche parts are among the most expensive car parts available, lol. I did some cant even find just the headers themselves for $600. Some quick googling showed full exhaust systems at significantly higher prices than DeLorean, $3k, $4k, $5k (for the cheap ones!). I suppose used ones would be less, but even still.
Did you see the price of the 997 exhaust you have pictured in the first post??
(This one)
In case you didn't, here's where its for sale: http://www.renntechmercedes.com/www/node/468
And it's price tag? $12,750
I say stick with the DeLorean stuff, haha
