The Delorean has the best gas mileage... but I doubt this guy has to worry about the price of gas.

Good catch, that.

According to Nick Sutton's book there were suppliers to GM who also supplied DMC with parts/assemblies for the car. Some suppliers were subsidiaries of General Motors. So if GM tried to place any embargo on parts to be sold by any of the Big Three to DMC it wasn't much of an embargo.

These three assemblies were sold to DMC by suppliers who were subsidiaries of GM at the time:

Instrument cluster: AC Spark Plug (per the book, but maybe actually AC-Delco since AC Spark Plug and Delco merged in 1974)
A/C system: Harrison Radiator
Steering column: Saginaw Steering

As he went from Shelby to Shelby to Shelby, there was certainly a theme going, that I thought was broken by the D, but he seems to admire JZD in much the same way that he admires CS, two maverick American car guys

Hey look, it's Ed! Ed is practically my neighbor and a hell of a nice guy. That GT40 is a nice car, though it makes the DeLorean look very spacious - it took some work (and removing the steering wheel, of course) to get myself inside of that thing...
