I used to like trains...
Until I moved into an apartment less than 2 blocks from some tracks.
That cross a major arterial street.
That are about 4 miles from a BNSF yard.
I hear diesel engines, squealing brakes, flat wheels that grind & clunk, and chimes all day and all night. And I don't know who the engineer is that works the first part of the week and runs the locomotive between 11:30pm and 1:20am, nor WHY HE INSISTS UPON LAYING ON THE HORN SOLID INSTEAD OF SEVERAL SHORT BLASTS! WHY DO YOU KEEP WAKING ME UP?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?! YOU'RE SCARING MY CAT! IF I COULD I'D TOSS FIRECRACKERS AT YOUR HEAD WHILE YOU SLEEP TO SEE HOW YOU'D LIKE IT!
Anyhow, it could be worse. This guy could live in the apartment above me:
Trains are alright when they're parked or you're riding in one. Train tracks are awful.

Is there a gate at the crossing? If not, the engineer is required to blow the horn to warn traffic (even if there is none). There's one of those in our neighborhood, too.
A friend of mine recently bought some cheap property. He found out why it was cheap: the tracks run next to the house, and the crossing is just outside his driveway. There's no gate at the crossing, so -- HONK HONK!

I was crazy about trains when I was little. After working around them for a few years, I hate them. I am glad to have a job that has nothing to do with them anymore.
As far as the horn blowing goes. There is a law requiring the engineer to blow the horn for 2 long blasts, then a short, and another long at every crossing, not just the xings without a gate. Unless the xing is in a "quiet zone", which the FRA has to approve of first. So, you could always try to get a quiet zone started.
I will say that people seem to loose all common sense around trains. I have personally seen a car go around the gate and slam right into an oncoming 70mph Amtrak train. When I was in WI working, a man committed suicide by standing in the middle of the tracks, facing down the train.

No-one is to stone anyone, even, and I want to make this absolutely clear, even if they do say "carburetor"
