It wasn't just one bid. Has a history of healthy bids which doesn't mean I disagree with you but it's still encouraging nonetheless.

Unfortunately for the purchaser (assuming it went through), that car is going to require a lot of work above the 34k price paid.

It's encouraging to see sales prices continue to rise. I check Hagerty every once in a while to see what the "official" valuations are, if you can call them that. Here's the latest for Jan 2020:

I have been lucky enough to drive for Mecum Auction Kissimmee again. I drove a 590 mile 1983 Pontiac Firebird last weekend. It was a time capsule - essentially brand new. I was transported back to that year when I shuttled the car around the auction stages. It still sported the original Eagle NCT tires. Similarly, the buyer of that car would want to keep it as is. I think the largest value is in maintaining the time capsule.
I have seen lower than 17 miles, believe it was 9, but its in a very private collection. Nov 81 build. Wasnt allowed to take photos though of anything

Wow, very cool. Isn't it awesome to see such a time capsule?

That car could have been so much more with a little more effort. The frame was nice but for the price of a few cans of brake cleaner and degreaser, a bag of rags and an afternoon it could have looked so much better and worthy of top tier asking price. I'm guessing just north of 30k but with a little more elbow grease along with it's history, it could have been a 45k+ machine.

That thing started at 44K and dropped to under 38K. I'd guess a deal was struck in the 36K range, which was really good IMO.
