I am not affiliated with Delorean Midwest in anyway.
Well, in all fairness it wasn't really presented in the most positive of lights. That's probably because there isn't a whole lot of information about it here in North America.
The UN Series transaxle is a modular design. We happen to use the UN-369, not the UN-1, but interestingly enough we do have the most highly sought-after version for the gear ratios. Many people who build mid-engined kit cars, Ford GT-40s in particular where the transaxle is mated to SBF, SBC, and Ford Modular engines from the Triton to the Coyote, seek out these gearboxes to complete the cars. So V8 engines paired with them is nothing new with a wide aftermarket support of off the shelf bellhousing adapters readily available. So they're capable of handling some power. As both Darryl Tinnerstet and Lotus discovered, bulk up the input shaft and fill with Mobil-1 Full Synthetic gear oil to keep them happy.
The UN Series transaxle has been installed into a wide variety of applications, including both cars, vans, and even an RV. It started life as a 4-speed box. Production saw the addition of a 5th gear, and aftermarket companies did offer kits to install a 6th gear as well. As a modular design it was able to be installed in Front Wheel Drive & Rear Wheel drive, mid-engine vehicles. A quick flip of the Ring Gear allows output to be reversed so that it may be installed in Rear Wheel Drive, Rear Engine applications such as in our cars. A little known fact is that there was even another variation, the UN-7. This transaxle had a lengthened Pinion Shaft which passed through an output seal on the rear of the transaxle. This allowed for power to be delivered to a rear differential with a Viscous Coupling to create the All-Wheel Drive "Quadra" line of cars and mini vans offered by Renault. They're more robust than what most people given them credit for.
