New rubber for the spare can be found pretty easily in case you get a wheel with an old tire on it. I bought a new tire for the spare last season and a local tire shop got it in without much trouble.
I don't know what the likelihood is of me actually using it on the side of the road, but if I was keeping the spare in the trunk, I wanted it to be more than just decoration.

There is also a spare tire retaining strap listed on ebay if you need that also. It is not mine but noticed it
today.
