140MPH speedo questions

I'm considering putting in the 140MPH speedo while I'm swapping my binnacle out. Has anyone put in the 140MPH speedo, and did it work out well? Do you know what DMCH wants the core for? Are they taking the 85MPH cores and converting them to 140MPH? I'd really like to keep my original speedo if possible.

Also, is there a way to set the mileage on the new speedo to match your old speedo?

Speedometers from all of us are recalibrated and convertered. (probably by the same company imo) The biggest issue is the fact that over 100mph the accuracy does decline if you put it up against a gps. Since you shouldn't be going that fast anyways.... Highly recommend to also upgrade to a one piece speedo cable. (Both myself and Grady carry these at all times)

The factory cables are two piece and run through the lambda box. My guess is it just bypasses the lambda box altogether. My personal belief is that most people tighten the lambda box ends too tight. It needs to be only finger tight, maybe even a little less. Too tight binds the box and strips the angle drive and cap. People replace the drive, but leave the cable to the box alone, and spend the rest of their DeLorean ownership life replacing angle drives and caps every 6 months.

That is correct. In many cases it takes care of hopping issues in the speedo head from the transition through the lambda box.

What does the Lambda box do? Is it bad to circumvent it? Also, I can't find the speedos on your site Josh.

What about the mileage, is there any way to set the mileage to the same as my current speedo?

I won't speak for any vendors as I do not represent them; however, I would strongly assume they'll set the mileage to what you want before you receive it as changing the mileage yourself is - technically - an illegal move even if your intentions are good..

I replaced the 85 MPH speedometer with the 140MPH several years ago through Houston. They will set the odometer to that of the one you send in. I have had no trouble with the new unit. If I recall correctly, I don't think they can set the trip counter, if that's of any importance to you.

I think the core is for a plastic pin on the speedometer itself. Do be very careful if you ship yours back. I think mine was damaged in transit and I couldn't get the core for it.

I bought a 140 speedo from another owner a while back. The mileage was actually only off by ~7kmiles but I didn't really care as I didnt think mileage really mattered in my car. I fixed the mileage for one of Ken Konceliks cars a few years ago and it was such a PITA with the little cardboard/paper pieces that I decided it wasn't worth it with this one.

I will say that it is not the most accurate at the high end and the low end. I had to replace the trip reset in it meaning the needle had to come off. You have to be really careful about where you put the needle back on because it will completely screw up your calibration even if it's just off by a couple degrees (or less). Not sure about others but mine reads high at the low end and low at the high end. At 25 it's reading about 15, from 35-65 it's pretty accurate, at 80 it's reading about 83, and at 130 it's reading about 136 :wink:.

Honestly though of all of these, this is how I'd prefer it. I'd rather it read a little bit high at the high end, that way if I think I'm doing 75, I'm probably only doing 72 or so and will hopefully stay out of trouble :thumbup: :burnout:

At some point I need to switch over to a 1 piece cable. Josh what do you recommend for speedo cable lubrication? Do you use a dry lube? Like graphite powder? Or do you have something better?
