Gold DMC in Reno damaged by arson

I remember when shopping for insurance, Hagerty listed the "gold" option.

With only a few chips to the plating I wonder if they will file a claim? Is there a way to even find matching 24K donor gold? The DeLorean Story explains the gold layer had to be thicker than they thought to achieve an even color.

When they assembled the last Delorean using the extra gold panels a door was missing. They took another door and had it plated. They were never able to get the plating to exactly match the rest of the car. If they don't do ALL of the panels together at the same time it seems it's impossible to match up. I don't know if they can just "touch up" chips. Can you imagine what it would cost to disassemble the car, replate all of the panels, and then reassemble it? I would wonder if the museum would have enough insurance coverage! And now they need insurance to cover sinkholes!!!!!!!!!!!

So the Peterson Museum in LA has the other factory made car, with the last currently in Maryland?

The gold was electroplated onto the stainless. I can't imagine a way to fix the damage that would blend, but then again we have not yet seen a photo.

What a shame. The only factory built DMC-12 with brown interior gets to be nearby during a truly senseless firebombing. At least no one was hurt but what a waste. I have always enjoyed reading about the gold cars and still hope to see one in person someday. I missed it when it was in DC the other weekend.

I own a small outfit to electroplate gold. If it's small chips, a wand with 24k can touch them up to hide the underlying stainless. But if it's chipped I hope it's just in the plating, if it's down into the stainless that's another story. Polishing after will help blend the color. When they electroplated the panels back in the 80's they were dipped in a vat for the process. A small bottle of gold cost me around 500.00 and won't go far. I couldn't imagine what a vat full would be!

It's bad enough to screw with cars, but one of my favorites? I'd show him how a DeLorean really should be treated... I'd strap him down to a trailer and go over every inch of his body with a Wolfhead Wheel. I would finish by hanging a pina colada air freshener around his neck.

Here is a good video illustrating (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekGazrZ3fls&t=1m36s). There is a small cap that pops off the sprinkler when it is heated (the brass colored piece that goes flying). I'm guessing that is what damaged the car. You could see how with water pressure behind it that it could be shot down rather forcefully.

On some pressurized water sprinkler systems, there is a cover
over the sprinkler head that is forced off, under pressure, when
the system is activated. My guess is one or more of these covers
made contact with the top of one or more panels, causing scratches
or even taking off a bit of the gold plating.

I was wondering the same thing, and I'm in the sprinkler industry! First of off, the spray pattern of a sprinkler head is water droplets. It doesn't come out in a sharp stream unless you are trying to protect a specific item. So I would rule out the force of the water causing damage. Now, the water that is in the system is usually pretty nasty. It will come out black if the system hasn't been flushed out in a while. That could stain some surfaces. There could also be additives to the system, antifreeze or corrosion treatment. But they would be flushed out rather quickly.

I was thinking more than likely, the sprinkler head activated and the sudden burst of water knocked down signage or something else from the ceiling that landed on the car. Also,
when a sprinkler head goes off, pieces of the sprinkler head break away and will drop to the ground. It's possible that caused the damage. The newer glass bulb heads it would only be a plug that holds back the water, the older solder link heads would have 5 or so small pieces break away.

In all, the sprinkler system saved the car. Without it, the fire could of spread causing extensive heat and smoke damage to the building and more vehicles.

it's turning out that museums can be dangerous places for cars!!!!!!!!! I bet after this museums will not offer insurance on cars that are lent to them, only cars actually owned by the museum itself. A lot of people who have a lot of cars, offer to let some of them sit in a museum for the free storage and insurance.

According to the museum, the car was donated from the original owner in Pasadena California. When the car arrived, the Title actually listed "LK Sport Coupe" as the model type, and not DMC-12. As such because that's what the paperwork said, that's what they left. When Sunstar began researching the car for the model, the Harrah's collection is where they went and that's where they got it from.

Who knows why they did any of this. The first time I got my car titled in Nevada, the model was "DMC-12". When I applied for a new title later on, it said "DT26" because they were confused (not the first time in Nevada) and just used the VIN. I also went from "Silver" to *blank* on the color because they didn't know what to do. Apparently when you write "No Paint-Factory Stainless Steel", this confuses the living hell out of DMV clerks...

I went to the museum in Reno over the fourth of july weekend and saw the gold DeLorean in their service garage. It was not damaged by the fire. Apparently, their fire sprinklers have a two stage activation. The sprinkler is covered by a metal plate, and when it gets hot enough, the solder holding the plate to the ceiling melts and the plate falls to the floor. The solder is what fell onto the roof of the driver's door. The actual plate missed the car. It didn't get hot enough in the lobby of the museum to actually activate the sprinkler over the car. The workers at the museum believe they can get the solder off the door without damaging the gold finish underneath. Solder is essentially lead and is much softer than gold.
