I saw this (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?9994-Sandpaper-and-Stainless) thread, however I need some details.

I have a hood that needs to be regrained. A prior owner put swirl marks into it trying to rough it up so that the paint would stick. I've heard of people using a flapper wheel, others just say elbow grease. What is the easiest way to get rid of the swirl marks and restore the hood to it's proper grain? I do have a grooved hood so I wouldn't want to do anything that could damage the grooves. Here (http://imgur.com/a/jG8eX#33) is a link to a picture of the hood.

Easiest way is to take it to a Delorean shop and have it regrained. Not the cheapest. If you do it yourself it *can* be done by hand but that is the long, hard way. A power tool is the way to go but you really need to know how to use it and they are not cheap.

A flap wheel is just elbow grease that's fast. You won't hurt the grooves, but excess pressure will cause the dreaded "X" to appear.

Use 80 grit/120 grit paper, and then a blending pad. By hand it will take a very long time, but if you have more time than money it will work. The other issue with "by hand" is that it's harder than you think to keep going in a perfectly straight line, and anything but a perfectly straight line is very visible.

I am at a little of a disadvantage. i have not been up close to another Delorean since i was at universal studios. So i cant compare my finish to other cars.

I had vertical scratches in my panels and said what the hell i will try these scoring pads. They were cheep and i had nothing to loose. I like the way the car looks. i just went with the grain, and in some cases i just re grained the panel.

I think in the store they were call fake steel wool. Since there were a gray plastic scrounge.

I would say to try a small area and see what you think.

Unfortunately looking at your hood, I can kind of see the "X" there already. :(

Ya, unless I happen across an unpainted grooved hood and the owner wants to repaint this one, I think I'm stuck with it.

You could always sell your hood to the bloke who owns the pink one that usually has 2-20 people lying and standing on it.
