View Full Version : Are you older than your car?

From a couple of the DCS speeches in Dayton, it was mentioned about how nice it is to see the next generation of owners arrive and continue on the dream. This came from the likes of the POG guys, ex-Dunmurry employees like Nick Sutton, and others. And unlike some other brands (the Cadillac Alante came up as the example), we have a brand new young generation leading the charge.

With that in mind, I realized the other day I have a cousin born in the same month and year as my car (September 1981). And that got me thinking of the poll question:

Are you older than your car?

Yes or No.

(Just for fun... and based on the build date of your car compared to your birth date).

No, my car has two months on me.

Both myself and my car are 81's, which I think is really cool. January for me, October for the car. Aside from most DeLo's being 81's (correct me if I'm wrong), this was part of my reason to get an 81 car when searching.

It's possible my car was built the day I turned 20 years old. :)

I got married when my car was built...

My kids are about as old as my car.

Cool comparison!!

I wasn't quite the age to be getting married or having kids... not as an almost 7 year old :)

Got any vintage pics of you and that era??? This could get funny/embarrassing... I'm picturing some pretty sweet sideburns and big lapels on the suits. I'll see if I can find anything in the old photo albums of that timeframe... :)

I've got 2.5 years on my car. So if the car is considered an antique, what does that make me, besides crazy for owning one? :bang:

I've got 18 years on my car. I graduated from high school in 1983, the same year as my car. I tell people that the car was new and cutting edge, back when I thought I was cutting edge.

I was thirteen years old when my DeLorean was made.
What I find funny / strange when people I don’t know ask me if I bought my DeLorean when it was brand new. I have to explain, "No I couldn’t afford a new DeLorean in 1981 since I was only thirteen years old".

That's funny because for a while I wanted to find an 83, that's my year too.

My Oct 81 VIN has about a year and a half on me. I would have been a fool to pass it up.

I have one year on my car. I also get the question "did you buy it new?" If so, I was a well off one year old...

I was 8 when my DeLorean rolled of the manufacturing floor. And that was still about 5-6 years before I saw one of its brothers in the movie we all know (watched it on a VIDEO2000 recorder at a friends house...good ol' times)

While I am very pleased to see a younger generation taking an interest in the DeLorean, I am not too sure about the "leading the charge" comment. I put between 70 & 80,000 miles on my first (6530) and am now pushing 150,000 on 16867. So, just maybe, Jacko, the Holler's and I (and some others) are leading the charge and you youngsters are trying to catch up. Oh, and my 83 has a build in late 82 which is the year of life I will be entering next week. So I guess that makes me just about 50 years older than my car.

FWIW, in 16867 I have done both an 1800 mile trip and a 2000 mile trip in 2014 and I now have a 4,000 mile trip planned for this fall.

There should be a trophy for the OLDEST and LONGEST owner of their D's.

That would be Jacko right?

I was a teenager when I first heard of a Delorean and saw the commercial. One of my classmates' older brother got one & painted it red.
I graduated in '84; I don't recall if I saw BTTF in the theatre, but when I watched it I was reminded how cool the car is.

I really don't know. I have owned a DeLorean continuously since Sept 1982 and will turn 81 on Bastille Day. DPI Josh mentioned to me that he has a customer who is 90(?) but I know nothing further about that.

I guess owning a DeLorean keeps you feeling young. Hope I can still drive my D at 90 years old.

No question in my mind - but you've got a long way to go before you get there (you're only in your mid 40's right)

Mine was made in May 1981, same month and year I was born. That is part of the reason I chose two get this one even thought there was a lot of work involve. It was meant to be.

My car was made Oct of 81. I was born in 42 ----this makes me 72 and the car almost 33. I have owned the car since Jan of 82 so that would be over 32 years of having a pia car, blowing money, and always looking for new items ( not needed) to put on my baby. I truly love my car but there are times when I question my sanity.

I agree. I get the same feeling. The worst thing is to explain the "necessary" new spendings to my wife who questions my sanity with this car anyway.
You know that it is insane but you have to act as it is the most natural thing in the world to keep the D up and running.

Ah, she is great though. Love her with all my heart. After all, she allowed this insanity to happen. :D

I was a 16 year old car nut when the first movie introduced me to the icon. But it wasn't the movie that prompted me to buy one. It was the story & history, the excellent parts vendors, and the mature and friendly owner network that made me buy a car that I couldn't drive home. I knew that I was in good hands as I tackled the restoration.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the owners that have kept the dream alive, so that current and future generations can grab the torch with confidence.
