Eibach questions

Hello Brothers And Sisters,

i have restored a lot of things on 726, and now I think its time for the Eibach kit and some new tires. My car's PO cut the springs...so the car sits low, but I can feel a jolt and a clunk sound whenever i run over a bump or nick or anything in the road. My question is this. For those of you that have the Eibach kit, is there a lot of noticeable difference? Is it smoother, quieter? I know i need tires, and have to have the alignment done. It this a much needed upgrade? I have the Stage 2, and i recently did my interior with Hervys foam and dynamite, new carpets and seat covers, and WOW is that a difference. Anyway, I guess Im just looking for opinions from you GURUS.

I am also wanting to do a set of lowering springs/shocks.....I just did my tie rod ends so maybe I should jump in with you before the alignment gets done...

I am not expert, so I will comment in hopes that someone will correct me.

In general, springs are for height adjustment. The Eibachs lower the car about 3-4 inches in the front, 2-3 in the back. Springs should be calibrated for the correct weight. Since our cars have most of the weight in back, you need a 'stronger' spring. Cutting the spring changes the weight/compressing of the spring. This could be bad.

If you want a smoother ride, you need 'smoother' shocks. If your shocks are gone, you will feel every bump and crack. The springs will not do much in dampening shock. Some shocks are adjustable to give you range of dampening.

I have Eibach and new shocks, and there is a noticeable difference from stock set up. I also have a bunch of steering/suspension upgrades that make it totally different from stock.

First a note about what "the Eibach kit" is. To me it is the Eibach Pro-Kit DeLorean-spec springs (fronts and rears) and any of a number of aftermarket shock options that fit DeLoreans. Virtually all of those shocks will have rears that come with threaded collars allowing the rear ride height to be adjusted over a wide range. If you are talking about keeping your current shocks and changing ONLY the springs then some of what I'm about to report will not apply.

So here is just one story. I moved from the full-stock OEM setup about 6 years and 15K miles ago. The OE Girling shocks were still OK at the time but I wanted better handling and not the nose-high OE stance. So it was Eibachs and DMCH no-name shocks all-around, along with adjustable lower control arms in back, TAB-replacement plus sway bar bushing replacement completing the upgrade. The rear spring perches were set so that the frame and underbody are level F/R and the rear control arms were adjusted to get the rear camber within spec at the new rear ride height. Tires were unchanged Michelin Pilots in OE sizes. The alignment was in spec before the job started and my shop gave it a full alignment to spec afterward.

Results: Much more responsive turn-in, flatter handling, much-reduced bump-steer and exactly the F/R ride heights I wanted. The front end doesn't bottom out like it used to over potholes and it is not as "floaty" up front at higher speeds. Tire wear is low/normal. Crosswind stability still leaves something to be desired but is only about half as bad as it was before. One unavoidable downside is that being about 1.5-2.0in lower in front (not the 3-4 in. that others report) since the change I am more careful at driveways than before. No air dam problems. The car has never "settled" in terms of ride height since the conversion. I measured it recently.

It's not any quieter and is somewhat less "smooth" than the OE setup. The shocks that came from DMCH at the time are valved tighter than the Girlings so if you want a cushy ride get soft shocks or adjustables. I'm very happy with the entire setup as it is and never think of going back. Adjustable-valve shocks have become more available since then and I'd consider them if doing it again.

You ask if "the Eibach kit" is a much-needed upgrade. If your car is jolting and clunking then you have something wrong. You need some kind of suspension repair or upgrade. You may even have bent something somewhere, so at least do a good inspection right now.

Another point for the Eibach set is that you can adjust the softness of the shocks with dials on the shocks. My shop (DMC NW) set it to a medium level and I can make it harder or softer. But all has its limitations. It is a sportive set of shocks and, in my opinion, enhances the ride quality.

I had the complete kit on my car for a few days only and then replaced the shocks with
adjutable ones from Ed.

Reason - in a slight curve I almost threw the car somewhere in a field because it was
way too soft for my taste.

I know Americans like Cadillacs...

General question related to The Eibach Kit that any of the vendors sell.

My impression is that when somebody says they put Eibachs on their DeLorean what they mean is that they have Eibach Pro-Kit springs, designed for the DeLorean, all around and that they have non-Eibach shock absorbers all around. Looking to get any confirmation of this impression.

Q: Does Eibach make shocks that fit DeLoreans and, if so, do any of our vendors sell them?

Am not looking for shocks myself, just trying to clear things up about what an "Eibach kit" is. This goes back to the original post in this thread asking about "the Eibach kit".

When I purchased my DeLorean 6 years ago, I cut down the springs, which were original. I liked the look, but the drive was scary! Hitting a pothole at 60mph was a VERY scary feeling! I upgraded to the Eibach's, and LOVE them! You can adjust the height on the rears, too, which is nice.
I recommend them.
