After years of lurking the forum and looking at probably over 8 cars, I finally found a DeLorean and purchased it on Thursday. VIN 11056 is an '82 grey 5 speed and was in Virginia. On Thursday my friend and I flew down and after a thorough inspection of the car, I decided to finally take the plunge! My friend and I drove the roughly 850 miles back to Maine Thursday into Friday and the car performed like a champ! It is in rock solid shape, mechanically. Electrically, I need to sort a few things out. Friday we crossed into Canada and Saturday it was registered and plated and is now an official Canadian car!

The car is in great condition with the frame only having a bit of minor surface rust near the fuel tank plate. The stainless has a couple pen tip sized dents in it and a few small scratches. It also looks like there are faded marks running along the side as if there were pin stripes on it at some point. The T-panel is a bit bowed in the middle, but not very badly, the panels are aligned all pretty well. The passenger side door looks a bit torqued as if the torsion bar is a bit too tight as it raises fast and bumps when it is let go. The driver side is fine. The engine bay is in great shape. The AC has already been converted to R134a. Car also has the stainless clutch line and the upgraded headlights.

The interior appears to be all original. The binnacle is unfortunately cracked. The dash lights don't seem to work and neither do the interior dome and rear interior lights. The fuel sender is also not working. We did find, however, that on our way home we were getting 25mpg so we were pleased with that after measuring the miles and how many gallons we were putting in it. God, gas is cheap in the States compared to home...

Yesterday I spent the day making the rounds to family and friends who wanted to see the car. I also had the day to look over and inspect the DeLorean and noticed I have a few things that need attention before my Provincial inspection. My brake light on the passenger side does not work and both reverse lights are not working. I spent this morning troubleshooting the easy fixes such as: checked the fuses (fine) and pulled the boards to check the light bulbs (also fine). I did notice that the passenger side board signal light socket was damaged but still works. I cleaned all the contacts and checked the wires and they all seemed in great shape. I even switched the boards from side to side and noticed that the passenger side board worked the same in the driver side position. The reverse lights did not change on either side. Not sure where the tail lights ground, that's my next step. I am going to check the wire on the transmission for the reverse lights next, but I am thinking I may need new tail light boards. Any other suggestions?

Congratulations. Looks like a nice car. Reverse lights have a switch on the tranny and then a two pin connector into the engine harness. I've seen that connector cause reverse lights not to work on two cars.

First and foremost; congrats!!

Definitely check the connection that Dave suggested. If that doesn't fix it, you may want to check the black plug on the bulkhead in the engine compartment. The reverse lights as well as the taillight ground is serviced from there. Make sure the connections are clean and that it is securely fastened. The reverse light wire should be green; in the first row below the single pin on top.

CONGRATULATIONS!

It's been a long time coming! I'm very happy for you!

Agreed about the Reverse Light Switch on the transmission. My car had the exact same problem. If you insert a jumper between the wires on the switch with the key in the ON position (but leave the engine off), it should indeed light right up.

For electrical issues, your best bet is investing in a good multimeter. Connect it between the wires on the socket and ensure that you're getting proper continuity. Run between the two, as well as checking the ground wire, as well as the 12V source when the pedal is depressed. It might just need a good cleaning. Invest in some pink erasers, and use them to rub off the oxidation on your boards. Then repeatedly insert and remove the boards to scrape out the plugs. Also invest in a good socket cleaning tool (cheap), and some small wire brushes to clean off the major grounding points. Do NOT use sandpaper as I believe the silica in the paper can cause connection issues later on. Wire brushes and pencil erasers will do just fine.

Good luck, and congrats again!

Congratulations from the other end of the country. I notice that you live in New Brunswick so be prepared for lots of Bricklin comparisons. Many people will probably think that your car is painted safety silver.

the frame only having a bit of minor surface rust near the fuel tank plate.

Congratulations mate - but be thorough investigating the source of that rust. The most common reason for it in that spot is leaked/spilt brake fluid, which means the frame inside the fuel tank area could be damaged. You'll want to remove the fuel tank plate and see if you can get a good look in there.

No big deal if there is - the tank comes out easy enough and then you have heaps of access for fixing it up.

Wow! Looks clean bud! CONGRATS!

My last D and the D I bought last weekend both had passenger side tail light issues and neither of their reverse lights worked. If you want the nail it in and be done fix, buy a new reverse switch - cheap - and new Grady tail light circuit boards. Install them. Pimp walk away.

Hey thanks everyone. I thought I had the taillight issue figured out as the brake lights were working after cleaning all the contacts and the bulbs on the boards again. Unfortunately, it only lasted half the drive and when out again. Still haven't gotten under the car to the transmission yet for the reverse issue as my jack is old. Perfect opportunity to convince the wife that I need a new jack! :) So I grabbed one tonight and will tackle that tomorrow after work.

I also want to chime into the "Congratulations from the (even further) other end of the Country". It is looking like a nice car. Clean engine bay. I wish you and your family a lot of fun with it and do not get discouraged if hitting a road block while restoring it. This forum and its members are a great source for help. You might have to throw money at it, but there are also great ideas for fixes that do not cost a lot.

Anywho! Congratulations and all the best!
