Oil guage is not reading properly

ok so I noticed that the needle on the gauge just shoots to the top past 80 psi while in operation, the manual talks about and area to check oil pressure on the engine but if thats good where do I go from there?

Your sending unit has come unplugged, or there is a break in the circuit between it and the dash gauge.

Does it bounce around at all when the engine is hot and at idle? Does it go to zero when turned off?

It does not go to zero right away it stays around 60 but it just stays above 80 while its in operation

That's actually relatively normal for the OEM pressure sender. The replacement ones work better.

If you turn the key on without starting the engine the oil light should go on and the gauges should read zero.

If you energize the vehicle without starting the engine, and the oil pressure gauge pegs, the gauge is not seeing the sending unit (same with coolant temp).

Here's normal operation. Only thing different is that the oil pressure runs about half way at idle when the engine is thoroughly warmed. This is my car & it has an early style sender, so while driving (& when cold) it shows 80+ PSI of oil pressure.
