Oil Drain Plug

I am ready to change my oil and can't find my socket that fits the stock oil drain plug. Can anyone tell me the size of the square recessed plug?

I believe it's 8mm. I'd let you borrow mine if you were passing by Blacksburg, but I think I left it in my car, which is at DMCMW.

It's available from Snap On, as is the socket for the transmission plugs.

I bought a 8mm socket at pep boys a few days ago, forgot how much it was though

I bought a piece of 3/8" rod and ground it down to 5/16" and put it in a vice grip.

I just took a half inch or 9/16 bolt and grind-ed the threaded side down to match the square size. Then I can just take a 9/16 or 1/2 (or metric or whatever size you want to use) to take it in and out.

Cost me less than 1 dollar, and less then 5 min on the grinder after a few test fits. :paranoid:

I bought a cheap 3/8" ratchet and ground down the edges until I had a snug fit. It's now a unitasker but it only cost a couple of bucks and gets the job doe.

This is essentially what I did as well. I got these at harbor freight and ground down the edges of the 3/8 one.

If you want to ensure you'll find the old one, once its out you can replace it with a generic one with a standard head on it, magnetic if you like...

Hervey sells it, as do some parts stores.

Then you'll never need a specialty adapter again, and get the benefits of a magnetic plug too.

Dummkopf! That is what I feel like. After looking unsuccessfully for an 8MM square socket at Advance Auto, Autozone, Lowes, Sears and Harbor Freight, I came home and looked in the box containing my 20w 50 oil that I am taking to my garage. There in a zip lock bag was my Snap-on square socket and a couple of other items I planned to take.

I bought the square drive socket 10 to 12 years ago from DMC Texas. Warren shipped it to me for use in the oil drain plug. It is actually a 5/16 inch drive which is just slightly smaller than 8mm. The Snap-on part number is PPM410.

I guess I am glad I didn't find one.

*VERY* slightly (7.9375 mm). 8mm and 5/16 are the closest metric/fractional xRef's in your tool box.
