DeLorean Owners and Fans,
As many of you know, cars must be over 25 years old in order to be exempt from DOT and EPA Standards and imported into the USA privately.
There is another effort to address this non-sense rule that has been organized by Petrolicious. Specifics on this effort can be found here:

http://www.petrolicious.com/petrolisti-unite-time-to-rewrite-a-foolish-law

If you are willing, please sign. The petition can be found here at Whitehouse.gov:

http://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/repeal-dotepa-“25-year-rule”-car-import-ban-15-years-and-allow-importation-non-conforming-cars-and/PhZ4RMgz

We are a little over 50% in the signatures count needed to receive a response from the administration. If planets align and this is adopted, it would open the door to several cars that we are simply not allowed to have currently.

Thank you for taking the time to help out. Feel free to forward this to anyone that would be interested.

I see this discussion going political, regardless of my personal thoughts on the matter. My only question would be "what foreign vehicle less than 25 yrs old are you yearning to import that doesn't have a US spec counter-part"?

Maybe if there was a non daily-driver clause in there it would gain traction? I briefly skimmed the URL you provided so maybe that's already in there.

Our DeLoreans don't count in this discussion because they were virtually all built for the US market under US specs at the time.

A Porsche 959 comes to mind and the whole... truth or not story about Bill Gates keeping it at the shipping yards and such.

Meh - those look like they might be approaching the 25 yr mark soon anyways. Not my cup of tea but to each his own. Same traffic for the Nissan.

so the petition isn't really about doing away with the rule, jut modifying it to be a 15 year rule? Seems fair enough.

Yea I think that's fair.

I saw a post on another forum about this and it pointed out how the U.S. stricter standards keeps Chinese garbage out of our markets (for the time being), which I fully support. I imagine Chinese manufacturers will eventually export and offer US spec/compliant vehicles much like the Koreans did 15 years ago.

For collector vehicles, 12 years and older would seem to be a good fit. 12 year old and older collector vehicles is a Texas exemption to getting a dealer license if you're trading these kinds of vehicles. That's where I'm deriving that number.

But truthfully speaking, I still don't have anything on my radar newer than 25 years that I'm really wishing I could import here.

for me, the top two, that I could actually afford would be:

1993 Lancia Integrale Evo II (or similar)

and shortly a 2001 Renault Clio V6 Renault Sport, complete with DeLorean-ish wheels and a mid-mounted 2.9l V6 engine, Douvrin-built successor to the PRV,

Yes! My wife desperately wants a Nissan Figaro. Only a couple years to go under the current law though.
