Every year, for some reason, California DMV makes me have the Delorean SMOGED by a Test Only or Star SMOG Station. Every year, it passes except for the gas cap. Apparently, they do not have the proper test plug for the Delorean Gas Cap. Mine is not a locking cap but a regular cap. I am thinking that maybe I should buy a new one this year and see if that will help. Does anyone know if a standard cap will fit as that way they would be more likely to have a test plug for it. In short, does anyone know if a another type of cap will work?

Thanks,

Scot

Strange. I have an original gas cap and had no issues with my smog shop here in NorCal. Any idea if they use different testing equipment in San Diego than elsewhere in the state?

If you want to try a different cap, a Cooling System Technologies 6810 fuel cap is mentioned in this thread (http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?4040-Fuel-Cap-Replacement-Crossover) as a possible crossover part available at AutoZone.

Last time I had it dmogged they said the same thing but were able to just do it. I think he just bypassed it. If sounds like a known problem but not really a big deal.

My smog guy always say No APP. He doesn't have the adapter for the cap, so therefore, not applicable. I can scan a copy of my report if youd like to see, maybe take it to your guy as proof.

First, yes, on cars this old our DMV will require Test Only or Star stations.

And about my history with an OE cap - have taken the car to different station almost every 2-yr cycle:
1. Some stations had an adapter and some didn't
2. The ones that didn't all did an override - no problem, like Ryan reports

Unless the rules changed your shop should be able to process the car. But if they say no then I'm not sure you have a path forward - with them, anyway.

We have the same problem here in New Jersey. They finally fixed it and the gas cap test is N/A in the computer.

Ryan,

If you could that would be very helpful. My people are not too good about rhetoric but perhaps a visual might help.

Thanks,

I had the same problem when getting my car smogged this May, and I have a non-locking cap. Eventually the guy just gave up and used a cap he had around the shop.
