View Full Version : Transmission 5-Speed Clutch Is Slipping

Anyone have any problems with clutch slipping?

It appears to be intermittent right now... Doesn't happen all the time. It's most notable in 5th gear when I step on the go-pedal to accelerate I get an RPM surge that eventually settles down into a normal acceleration/RPM ratio. In the attached video when you see the RPMs drop down my foot is maintaining constant pressure on the gas pedal, not engaging the clutch or letting up on the throttle at all. (sorry about the quality - at night while driving)

It may also be showing up in lower gears as I started noticing that when I accelerate from dead stop as it seems like I need to give it a little extra gas to get it moving.

A bit of background to head off initial questions...

- The car/clutch has 18,000 original miles on it.
- I replaced the clutch master and slave about 2 years ago.
- I have the braided clutch line.

Anyone else run into this and suggest solutions/causes?

Thanks

Ah... Just a guess.... it is time for a new Clutch? Mine did that... it was on the rivets...

That's what I'm afraid of... However, my car only has 18,000 miles on it.
I updated my post with more info.

I've replaced clutches worn out at 6000 miles. My pet theory is that for many original owners it was the first manual transmission car they've ever driven, and they learned on it.

I've also seen good clutches but the pressure plate springs have failed after all this time and rust.

Well... shoot. Replacing a clutch is a little beyond my level of confidence. I'd probably have to have Toby at DMCNW do it. Just out of curiosity, what's something like that gonna cost me?
I see the kit is $275... Is this something that can be done on jack stands?

If you can drop the transmission and get it out from under the car, yes, it can be done on stands. Not easy though!

the good news is, just about any transmission shop should be able to replace your clutch.

I'm a bit nervous about that... I looked at the workshop manual and it looks pretty involved. Do you think it's really that similar to other cars - or only cars of that era? Some shops are wary of older cars...

Yes it can be done with jack stands fully extended. You will also need a low profile trans jack or suitable equivalent. Because yours is slipping now, the flywheel will need to be reconditioned. If you are not comfortable with all details of this Job and the little tricks that aid in reassembly, I would recommend taking it to Toby. I would guess your looking at about $1000-$1200 parts and labor and the job will be done right. Piece of mind is worth something.
