View Full Version : Electrical Is it worth reconditioning a Ducellier and will it sell?

Hi,

I still have my old Ducellier and it will need a new voltage regulator. The garage that fixed it did put a broken VR in ther and I have to get back to them to get it exchanged.

Anywho! Is it even worth doing it? Ducelliers are underpowered and most owners replace it with the Motorola. It is cheaper and more powerful. I put one in and am happy with it.

So my question is if it is even worth going to the shop and getting the VR replaced to then sell it. I do not want to waste time to then sit on a functioning but not selling alternator. :banghead:

1) If the garage owes you a working VR for the Ducey, and it would otherwise work well with a working VR, you could always keep it on your shelf as a backup/spare to your new Motorola.

2) If you're intent on selling it, whether it would sell would depend on how much you asked for it. I recently picked one up for $20, which I considered to be a fair price. They're a few people out there like myself who still value them, but only at a fair price.

Unless you are a nut for originality and are competing in Concours, the Ducey is worthless. It is probably worth more as scrap. If you want to see if it is worth anything put it up on E-Bay.

If they are worth that much I am sure all of the D venders have enough under their benches to satisfy demand. Good luck on getting that. Put it up with a Buy-It-Now of $500! Someone should jump at that bargain!

Eh, Mine still works :) Not that when it takes the shit I won't upgrade, but it's got 30+ years and 20K under it's belt...

Well, thanks for the input.

Yes, they owe me a working alternator, but I only want it as a item to sell. Seeing your replies I decided not to bring it back to that shop. Having a backup unit is nice but not really necessary as I am not using my D as a daily driver. And I woudl always replace it with another Motorola.

I am also not going through the hazzle in packing the thing up and shipping it (probably across the boarder) for $20. Do I value the money: yes I do, but I also value my time.

I replaced my good Ducey with a Delco a decade ago, but I still carried my Ducey in the trunk to DCS-2014 as a backup. A working Ducey is better than a dead alternator 250 miles from home.

And as someone who caravan'd with you to DCS, I for one was grateful that you had the spare Ducey with you, just in case :thumbup:

We still need to get together so that I can trade you my Motorola for that Ducey :biggrin:

A couple years ago I had a faulty VR in my Ducy and got it replaced at an alternator shop. He also replaced the bearing although there was nothing wrong with it as he overhauled it with parts that were available. Of course the important parts like stator and brushes were not available so were not replaced. Anyway, it has been working well since then and have taken a few long distance trips with it and there were no problems. I am however currently in the process of replacing it with the DMCH alternator and will keep the old Ducy since it still functions perfectly.
