So I've been thinking about this white one for a few weeks now, and would like to have it at the right price. Question is, what would that be? Assuming the mechanics are in good shape as stated, what do you guys think would be a fair price to pay for this car?

This assumes that it runs well and that all the accessory systems are fully functional, as the ad claims:

Advertised ask is $23k, which I honestly don't think is too far off the mark. The two things that hurt it the most are the paint job and the high mileage, but condition looks like it's definitely a solid 2, if not even a low 1. I personally think a fair range on this car is $19.5k-$23.5k.

Best luck in acquiring it for a price that's right for you

It's OK to fall in love with it, but if you are not 100% sure you're in it for a long haul, be careful. Painted cars, especially white, are extremely difficult to sell at any price (people expect DeLoreans to be silver). Most buyers won't even look at them, and the price won't make enough difference to make it attractive to the masses.

This must be part of your purchase equation. Unless you plan to die with it.

My personal equation (varies with the car price range a bit) is that all things being equal, its about a 20% discount for paint. Probably more if it's a high dollar car. If the paint is in bad shape it's worse because it will either need to be stripped or painted.

Painted cars are tough to adequately assess and place a representative value on.

So, let's pretend like it's not painted for a moment. Let's also pretend that it has the mileage of an average DeLorean - somewhere around 25,000. With those assumption in play, and again assuming full functionality, with a high 2 low 1 for condition, it would probably be close to a $30,000 car at an auction on the best possible day reasonably expected.

So then, let's allow a 15% discount for the high mileage, and another 20% discount (as Dave S suggested) for the paint, for a total price reduction of 35%, or $10,500. That would make the fair market value of the car somewhere around $19.5k.

Thus, my initial range was a little high.

Reassessed range - $17k-$22k

I actually really like it too. After I sold off my first D I bought a 94 Viper. It was white with blue stripes, and white rims. Loved that car! Something about white sports cars triggers my fancy......love the new Stingray in white too....

The paint looks to be in good shape. so i think it is a good looking car as it sits. The white makes it stand out form the crowd for sure. Painted d's are not what people expect, but if it is well done, I think people will like it for what it is.

I would have no problem dropping around 19k for this.

But painted cars are SO much easier for the owners to find at the DCS...:hihi2:

I usually do that is the funny thing!! Lately my bosswoman has requested more "quality time" watching her TV shows so I guess I have been more selective in the posts I read. Ha!

To me, the biggest question is "why was it painted?" Is it a perfect car underneath the paint or did it have bodywork? If it is perfect, then the paint is a matter of taste but if it was to cover bodywork then you really have a car that is severely handicapped in terms of selling it later. Just a thought......

My biggest problem is the drilled out rims for the studs. I'd throw that into the discount as well for the price of unmolested rims.
