For those of you who have extra cash to send, check out this alarm system.
Would be a rally cool modern feature to add to our D's.

Real cool,,,,,till it doesn't work! Here in the USA when you get caught driving under the influence they will stick another COOL device in your car, a breathalyzer! Now you have to go back into the bar and find someone who wasn't drinking to start your car!

2 thoughts here:
#1 I have enough trouble with the biometric fingerprint reader on my laptop. No thanks...
#2 I knew a guy at my office who had a court-ordered breathalyzer installed in his vehicle. We went out for a happy hour once (I didn't know about his "past" until I got in his car and saw the system). He had several drinks over a couple of hours and when it was time to leave he blew three or four times through a wooden duck call... then used an air mattress blower and the duck call to trick the system. That was the last time I rode with him.

No shit... wow. Scares me that there are people like that on the road.
As for fingerprint scanners i too have had very poor results with the ones on my laptops. If i were to integrate an ignition system, it would be a proximity fob & starter button much like newer cars. That would be cool.
Found this system... Hmmm. Looks like a future purchase.

Smart keys are awesome, haven't seen this before but seems like it's the typical setup OEMs use(which is good). It also seems to have a nice solution for opening the door without having a button in the handle. Seems like a good price too.

I've installed maybe one alarm system.
Removed a few dozen. They all suck. And most alarm installers are butchers.

I know I will sound hopelessly out of date but, is putting a key into an ignition slot really that great of a chore? Just saying :shhh:

David, Maybe if you didn't drink and drive that wouldn't have happened to you. Shame on you. You could have killed someone! How irresponsible!

You must have misunderstood my post. I did not say it happened to me. I said that is what they do to drivers (other drivers) when they get caught driving drunk.

I have to agree. Besides we have a mechanical steering LOCK. You still have too turn the key to the run position followed by the bio-metric sensor to get the car to start.

Don't I know it, I think my friends get a bit embarrassed because I shun smartphones and vehicles built after 1990 or so (written while admiring the super hi-tech on board computer in my BMW E30: time, date, average fuel economy, speed warning, range of travel left, stopwatch time and the temperature can be displayed!! What else could you ask for? :giggle:

You can replace that with some hopelessly complicated solenoids. Also like modern cars.
The biggest problem with "smart keys" is "dumb humans". A friend who will remain nameless dropped someone off at the airport driving the dropped-off person's car with such an arrangement. When she got back home and turned off the car, it was parked there until the owner returned, as the key went on the airplane with the owner.
The issue is that you can walk away from a running car with the key in your pocket, and it won't restart without having the key nearby.

Some cars have "apps" where you can lock, unlock, and START the car from your phone. Maybe she just had to call the owner and tell them to start the car back up. Good thing she didn't stop to get gas!

That's typically a 3rd party service.
There's usually a warning that comes up in the Meter saying No Key detected if the car is still running without it(in Nissans at least). Probably still not helpful if the person is already past security and what not, but still like anything else you will need to pay attention to. lol
On the plus side, you can never lock your keys inside the vehicle. In an OEM vehicle anyways, not sure if this aftermarket can guarantee same functionality.
