What annoys you about your Delorean? Does your car rattle, squeaks, vibrate, leak, smell, get hot in drivers compartment, overheat, always have minor issues (details), etc...

PS if it's the stupid questions and comments you get from those that don't know about the car that dpesn't count for this thread.

In all honesty I love everything about the car, but the one thing that does drive me crazy is how close the clutch, brake and gas pedals are to each other.

Giving gas is not so much of a problem, but clutching and braking at the same time can be a little close at times. I wear more of a boot style shoe most of the time so I know thats part of my problem, but I also have to wear a "wide" that I just can't avoid.

I've often thought about buying another clutch and brake assembly and modifying it to spread the pedals out more so I don't mess with my original, but I havn't decided if I'm totaly tired of this problem yet.

Luckily most things that bug me about my car are fixable, but I haven't gotten around to them yet. It annoys me that my steering wheel isn't centered when going straight. There's an annoying squeak from the driver's side door panel that I haven't been able to tackle. The floor mats are falling apart so they do a better job of making my carpet dirty than they do of keeping it clean and it annoys me, but I'm too cheap to buy new ones. The backlight behind the odometer reading is out and it annoys me every time I turn the lights on.

Another thing is the smell. I haven't been in another D in about 9 years and I don't remember what it's supposed to smell like. It just smells musky, but not necessarily in a bad way. It's just strong and it annoys me that I smell like the car after riding in it. It annoys me that the radio doesn't work because the antenna doesn't go up. It's annoying that no matter how good my car looks, people still point out that there's a crack in the dashboard. That's a good list to start with :)

I'm not sure how tall you are but wasn't JD about 6'4" tall and it was designed around or with him in mind? I'm 5'11" and drove one once for a short amount of time so I can't attest to this claim, anyone else? Changing out the horn is an easy fix no?

The only thing that bugs me about my car is how hot the interior gets. I've got a black interior car and if I leave it out in the sun in summer for only a minute it's unbearably hot inside. The DMC Texas windscreen cover it got for it does help alot though.
All the endless BTTF jokes get pretty annoying too but I guess that's par for the course with a cool car like a DMC. Other than that I love it.

These are all minor annoyances at best:

1. Catching my pants/shorts on the parking break. Even had the pull strap catch it a few times.

2. Backing into a parking space with no other cars as guides means I'm almost always on a line and thusly "that guy." In the end I either readjust or pull in forwards.

3. Radio reception is crap. Complete crap. Just terrible. Shoddy FM even with a new 12v antenna mounted right on the windshield with no obstructions. AM is just a fantasy.

My point was "if" the car was designed for a relatively tall man, the leg room should not be a problem for the avg. man, hence the reason I said "I don't know how tall you are". You can be annoyed and I thank you for your opinion, I just wanted to explore your reasoning a bit more. As for my comment on the horn being an easy or quick fix I figure although it may very well be an annoyance it is an easy one to take care of, as me being not very handy could dop it with my eyes almost closed. If you want let me know and I'll do it for you.

Whenever I'm parking in a tight spot I always pop open and take a peek out - best visibility ever... I think having the door open may help other impatient drivers see me easier so they are less likely to barrel through and hit me - they may run over some pedestrian while gawking at my door being up, but they don't hit me, which is what really matters.


My list:

Marginal AC
shrinking fascias
Harsh shifting in the automatic when up to full temperature
Stiff clutch in the 5 speed




And to anyone complaining about leg room - obviously this is your karmic payback... Statistically you make more money, you had first choice of all the girls, you have the best view at the parade, and your better at basketball. If feeling cramped is the only price you pay, I'll take two of your vertabra off your hands...

Get a box of fridge sized baking soda and leave it in your car with the windows rolled up for a few weeks. Does wonders.

On the opposite spectrum of "Annoyances" I absolutely LOVE that the parking brake is on the left side. I'm severely left handed and in other cars sometimes I have to reach over to release it with my left hand.

I'm lucky with a very good mechanical Delorean in a very good condition. I almost love its history more than the car itself.
But after the 5 years I have my Delorean, 2 things bug me too;

-Stiff clutch
-My steering wheel vibrates when braking at more than 55 MpH. I changed the steering rack, brakes,... still does that, but not as bad as in the beginning. It gives me the unsafe feeling the car might not be able to stop. Everytime a car in front of me brakes hard, it scares the sh... out of me.
-Windshieldwhipers are more or less vibrating too, but I hardly ever drive in the rain, so I do not care. I have rain X just in case.

But hey, she's 30 years old, I forgive her:biggrin:

Replace the horn for a loud one (they are available) and your horn troubles are gone.

I suppose your seat is all the way back already, otherwise you wouldn't complain about leg room.

It's the worst when you forget, and you go buy a milkshake to-go and then have no where to put it, leaving you to finish it before you can go driving again. It doesn't really work to put it between your legs, at least for me the steering wheel is too close, plus the incline of the seat makes it more likely whatever's in the cup will end up on my crotch one way or another.

Any way of solving the stiff clutch? I don't remember the "Delorean" I drove having a stiff clutch, is this just your car or do others feel the same way?

This may sound weird, but did you replace the rear brake rotors? I replaced my front rotors twice for this same reason. Finally I replaced the rears and the problem went away. I could feel the vibration in the whole car though, not just the steering wheel.

Back on topic:

Annoyances... I'll throw another A/C annoyance, doesn't always keep up. I can't believe no one has said poor rear visibility yet.

I love driving my car... finally. The 1st couple years of ownership were painful, but it is kick-a$$ now!!

I will say it is annoying having that little "20/20 Hindsight Devil" sitting on my shoulder ready to bark at me for not yet swapping out my TABs. I used to go easy over railroad crossings... but now I just give'er :)

I would have to say my annoyances are:

(1) Windscreen wipers will not operate smoothly, no matter how well i clean the windshield

(2) The vibration i get on the highway at about 110 km/hr that no suspension shop or wheel balance can seem to find a cause/cure

(3) The weird pop/clunk that eminates from the rear of the car when i turn left or right, once again nobody knows what it is

(4) Fuel spitting back at me when i am filling her up, when i push the nozzle in too far and forget to go slow on the trigger, especially if i have just spend hours cleaning the car, as it usually end up all over the hood.

Thats probably about it, cant wait to work out what is going on with my front end, so i can do a road trip. Other that the above, i love it!

-the wiper sprayer nozzle has broken on mine at least 3 times or more. I've ended up zip-tying it to the wiper blade. It doesn't look pretty, but it works...

3. Power. The car is slow... my focus is faster. I know i could spend 6k to get 60hp, but no... it's still slow as a stage 2.

I'm not sure where you affixed it, buy try using black heat shrink, it will look a lot better.



As far as stiff clutch complaints - not sure what the deal is there. Mine was a bit stiff, then I took it in to DMCCA to have the clutch replaced. When I picked it up it was soft as butter, wasn't sure how to drive the car at first. I got about a mile and stopped for gas and when it started up again it was stiffer than ever? Danny said it was fine, not to worry about it.

So what is the deal?

My biggest annoyance, aside from lack of cupholders and BTTF jokes, is the fact that the circuit breaker for my 3 and 4 speed on the fans tends to trip after a few minutes and then I have to use the weaker speed. Another item was factory window switches. I believe that I have the nicest-looking solution to this problem for a non-factory appearance.

Thanks for calming my slight "fear", I'm not sure who Blackie is but at least for now, no. I'm sitting on about 4K right now and saving $125 every week for the car or about 6K per yr. If all goes as planed I'll have 16K in 2 yrs and 20+ in 3 yrs. which should get me into a pretty nice car (fingers crossed). I can wait another yr. if needed to make the total 25+ if I have to.

I'm hoping that number will put me into something dependable with most fixes having been done, If I add 2K per yr of ownership I figure the car will stay in pretty good shape (fingers crossed) If anyone disagrees with this plan let me know, I'd love to hear where I'm going wrong.

I love the sound of the horn in my Saab 93, I was considering getting a replacement one and installing that one instead of the stock horn in the Delorean. Every time I beep at someone in my 93 I usually get that f-you look back from them, love it!

A couple that came to mind are the "shaking at 110 km/h" and the auto trans shifting hard at higher temperatures. Maybe one of our DMC vendors or experts would care to chime in?

I'd say both of these problems are things that need to be fixed.

I have an automatic and it shifts smooth as butter no matter how hot it gets and since 110 Km/h is less than 70 miles an hour and I try to get to the limit of my stock speedo needle every chance I get, this too is a problem that needs to be fixed.

I put these in my car because they were louder and yet the sound still fits with the car.

One caution they come with wimpy mounting hardware and the bolt on the back is ever so slightly larger than a stock horn. To get around this I honed out the hole in the OEM mounting brackets. It was such a small difference a stock horn could still use the bracket.

May I total your annoyances and put the big question?

- You are aware this is a 30 year old car that can't be judged by nowadays standards
- You call some things annoyances that are often the result of lack of maintenance or service
- You call some things annoyances where "quirk" should be more to the point
- You now almost all car makes have their quirks and annoyances
- You complain about the car
- You poor in lots of hard earned money to keep it going
- You love every moment you can drive the car
- You have learned to live with the built-in quirk and are willing to repair all defects

The big question therefore is:
If you do have annoyances and complaints, what's the alternative?
Can you live without it?

I love the sound of the horn in my Saab 93, I was considering getting a replacement one and installing that one instead of the stock horn in the Delorean. Every time I beep at someone in my 93 I usually get that f-you look back from them, love it!

Horns, right? Did you realize there are actually two? The high note and the low note horns. They fire at the same time, and are mounted symmetrically to each other - one on the right and one on the left. That may be part of your annoyance - one may not work at all.

Some owners turn the horns around so they point backwards - they are not as loud, but rain is not driven up into them and they last longer. I believe to point them backwards you simply swap them left for right...

At least it can be fixed and kept 100% stock! I considered the metric cluster like most Canadian cars have with the 240 Km/h speedo.

You're right, 08087 posed a question and it didn't specify the type of annoyances.

Since it was a little vague (not that there's anything wrong with that!) it was interpreted differently by everyone.

My personal understanding (not that I'm saying I'm correct) was he posed a question to get a better understanding of a car he WANTS to own down the road, to get a better understanding of the subjective and objective "annoyances" of the car. If I were to say my flat tire yesterday or cracked windshield annoyed me, it wouldn't provide him with any valuable information about DeLorean ownership. However, annoyances with things like fuel pump noise, exhaust note and rear visibility would.

Having said that, there is no wrong answer. Those of us who said an annoyance could be fixed were merely reinforcing and encouraging that possibility for 08087 and the owner.

No one has done anything wrong.

1.) You can't open the doors if someone parks really close to you.
2.) It must hard to keep the aluminum body clean.
3.) The GMC badge on the front doesn't look right.
4.) The car was designed by a guy who spent time in jail for doing drugs.

Blow past 85 with impunity... not that I advocate speeding... but I can promise that I "peg the needle" virtually everytime my car leaves the garage... did it today on a twisty road where the speed limit is 45... you will NOT break the speedometer.

Side note yes the rear of the car wants to lead, but that can be controlled through smart steering and throttle control. I think with the right tires the Delorean might make a pretty good drift car.

But my annoyance's would be the would 85 mph speedo and the inaccurate fuel gauge and I am running a tankzilla.

Blow past 85 with impunity... not that I advocate speeding... but I can promise that I "peg the needle" virtually everytime my car leaves the garage... did it today on a twisty road where the speed limit is 45... you will NOT break the speedometer.

You're right, 08087 posed a question and it didn't specify the type of annoyances.

Since it was a little vague (not that there's anything wrong with that!) it was interpreted differently by everyone.

My personal understanding (not that I'm saying I'm correct) was he posed a question to get a better understanding of a car he WANTS to own down the road, to get a better understanding of the subjective and objective "annoyances" of the car. If I were to say my flat tire yesterday or cracked windshield annoyed me, it wouldn't provide him with any valuable information about DeLorean ownership. However, annoyances with things like fuel pump noise, exhaust note and rear visibility would.

Having said that, there is no wrong answer. Those of us who said an annoyance could be fixed were merely reinforcing and encouraging that possibility for 08087 and the owner.

I worded my question (open ended ) as I did to get more responses and I think it worked out pretty well.

The poster above nailed it pretty well, I'm looking to buy and want to know about things that are "wrong" with a Delorean that you cannot fix or at least cost a bundle to fix. If a wheel wobble in the rear is inherent to a car and there is no fix available, I would stay away no matter how much I liked the look. If a car flexed so much that the windshield cracked under stress once a yr. I'd again stay away from that car.

Thanks to all, there is nothing I can say (in the quark/annoyance dept.) will keep me from following my dream of Delorean ownership.
