View Full Version : General Where are all the Deloreans worldwide?

I was wondering if there are some statistics known of where all the known Deloreans are worldwide as for each country?

There is the DeLorean Owners Directory:

The DeLorean Owner's Directory (DOD) lists all owners that wish to be listed. In addition to the DOD, is the Chronology (maintained by Shannon Birdwell) which lists known DeLorean builds. In addition to those, there is also the Registry, which lists more of the latest known information about the cars, including what country they are in. You'll find it here (http://www.citizenkidd.com/DMC/pages/vinview_totals.asp), also under the Texas Club web site.

Okay, then question for you two (or anyone else reading this) since I'm curious myself. Re-reading his post, I see something different (note underlined part):

I was wondering if there are some statistics known of where all the known Deloreans are worldwide as for each country? Are there any graphs or charts that break down known DeLorean locations? Obviously there's the full VIN List that states where all known DeLoreans are, but what about fancy summaries? As a coworker put it, it's just "glitter", but it's still something that would be interesting to visually see -- how many DeLoreans are in the US vs. Canada vs. Austrailia etc., and in addition, how many DeLoreans are in each state. With like a bar chart or something.

Anyone got one of those? Or if not, any chance you could compile one with the current list? It would make for a mighty interesting visual!

Are there any graphs or charts that break down known DeLorean locations?

Charts have been done in the past by Knut Grimsrud, of the Oregon club. Here (http://www.dmcnews.com/faq/n_chron.htm) is a link. I'm not sure how current it all is though.

I have considered doing some fancy charts and stuff, using our more current data, but it's all a matter of time. Maybe someday I'll get to it.

Shep,

if you see the link that Domi provided above, all of the data is available, but it's not in a nice chart.

PHP, ASP.NET, etc.? I'm a web developer by trade, maybe I can rig something up to quickly scan the database (using e.g. SELECT COUNT) and display it in HTML5 graph form? Pro bono, no strings attached, frankly I'd just love to see this data at a glance and always up-to-date. I've worked with 20 different programming languages and yet still manage to have lessons from non-native speakers about English when that's all I know, so apparently I speak computer better than I speak human (lol ;) )

If you're interested, shoot me a PM and we can work out the details.

Shep,

if you see the link that Domi provided above, all of the data is available, but it's not in a nice chart.Precisely -- I'd like to see a visual chart, not just numbers. Hard to visualize numbers when you're a visual learner :)

If it helps, officially there are about 175 cars in the UK probably 200-225 (ish) in reality, and I understand a similar amount in Ireland (north and south)

A bit off-topic....BUT has anyone got an idea of how many automatic Deloreans are left in the world? I have almost convinced myself that they are some kind of a rarity!! :)

Mine is an automatic...and yeah I been told they are rare....rare enough that Toby at DMCNW doesnt have many automatic specific parts...hehe.

how many Deloreans are actually accounted for, out of the total number made

when i think of the thousands that were made, the most I've in seen in one place in person was maybe 20

Somethings not adding up, I want answers, it's a conspiracy:)!!

Roughly 25% of DeLoreans were automatics according to this sheet that I found long ago.

I dont think it constitutes rarity as far as value is concerned, but perhaps as far as parts availability it does.

If you want to have a rare car, get a black interior automatic 1982. Talk about few...

Interesting. I had always thought black interior automatics were the rarest of the combinations (transmission and colour, but not including year). But looking at the year breakdown, for the 81s, it was really the gray interior automatics that there were far less of. I'll have to adjust my useless car show banter accordingly. :)

Of the parts on the car that would be specific to one transmission and not the other, are there a lot of automatic car parts you can't get compared to something similar on the manual transmission cars?

One thing I would like to get from my "future order/but NLA" list is the bracket that holds the oil cooler in place. I have the nuts and bolts but not the bracket and it has been that way since I got the car in 2007. That cooler and bracket are unique to the automatics though, so maybe this is one of those parts you had in mind?

Are there many others?

Well, there is at least a vacuum line thats odd sized that they didnt have up there...of course the auto trans filters..but at leasts theres that guy who fabricated new ones..which I may be getting in my car.

I've been working with an owner in New Zealand and asked how many DeLoreans are there. He said most think 15 but some say 30 is closer. I was surprised because not many NZ guys on the forums.

I would never purport this is the definitive answer, but our databse shows 12 (http://www.citizenkidd.com/dmc/pages/vinview_totals_spec.asp?vinstart=37). Two of those are in museums (thank you Dangermouse) and only two of the others are active members of the DOD.

Referring to our database (http://www.citizenkidd.com/dmc/pages/vinview_TOTALS.asp) again, it appears that of the known cars, manual transmissions outnumber automatics by about 2:1, out of 6327 known transmissions. The remaining cars, 2457, are unknown.

But using that same 2:1 ratio, that would be another 819 automatics added to the known 2138 automatics, for a total of 2957 automatics transmission cars.

You have MN listed twice and NM is missing. I think a typo...

Great information, though. I've been to your site but hadn't seen that summary page before.

I see that typo now, and will have it fixed shortly. Thanks for catching it.

You know, I’ve looked at that statistics page a thousand times or more, and never caught it. Just goes to show you, when you’re deep into code, sometimes you can’t see the trees through the forest, or can’t see the forest for the trees, or New Mexico through Minnesota, or something like that. Wow.

I see you're collecting some new data about the cars (conversions, modifications, etc). When will registered owners be able to edit that?

For some Registry data (e.g. location, mods), I too would like to enable this capability, but the number of updates I get are so small it just isn’t warranted (I get 0-2 per month). And of course, adding the capability to self-modify such information would need to be password guarded, and that adds a whole other layer of complexity to both the database and web pages. Generally, most Registry type information (interiors, transmissions, hood types) rarely, if ever, change.

Since currently most people just post on DMCTalk under thread name “VIN Chronology” , or they PM me, or send me an email, there hasn’t been enough impetus to add the capability for self-updating Registry data. Also, people that don’t post here are not likely to even know about the Texas Club Registry database.

On a related note, if you are a DOD member in good standing, you can already make changes yourself to your own DOD data. I run a utility that updates the Registry from the DOD (where applicable), since the DOD is more likely to be current, because people can update their own data.

For now, I ask you to kindly send me your info, and I will affect the changes.

Something can't be right.....If only 25% of all the original cars built were automatics, then there should only be 1500 automatics out of 6000 cars. Right?:)........................ As an aside, it might be fun to create different "clubs" on this site where like vehicles could congregate. (for ex a club for 1981 Automatics with black interiors...etc.) This would also give us a way to guage what is out there.

I think the number is closer to 33% - the chart Nick referenced was based on only those cars on Knut's VINlist back in 2006 that had a transmission type associated with them. The txdmc data is more complete

There are about 9,000 Deloreans made. 25% of tht would be 2,250. That assumes that 25% is correct. I can check on that percentage and get back to you.

Ok, I did some calculations. I have 6,323 cars where I have a record of the transmission type. 4,176 are manuals (66.04%) and 2,147 are automatics (33.96%) so about 66% of Deloreans are 5 speed and 34% are automatics.

Dangermouse

Out of around 9000 cars, I see 710 1981 grey autos

lazabby

Ok I did more back of the envelope calculations and here is what I come up with:
For '81 Deloreans
Black 5 speeds 34%
Black Autos 26%
Gray 5 speed 28%
Gray autos 12%

For '82 Deloreans
Black 5 speeds 4%
Black Auto 3%
Gray 5 Speeds 74%
Gray Auto 18%
Other 1%

For '83 Deloreans
Black 5 speed 23%
Black Auto 7%
Gray 5 speed 62%
Gray Autos 9%

There are a number of cars for which I am missing either the interior color or transmission type so I threw those out of the calculation. There are also a few cars that had black/gray interiors and I threw those out. There were a few that came out of the factory with a rare color such as brown (the gold cars), blue, burgundy and these made up a very small percentage and might have accounted for the "Other".

Thanks again ! It would appear (by percentages) that any 1982 with black interior is rare. But in order for these percentages to carry real meaning, we would need the total number of units for each year.
