View Full Version : General Thoughts on thickening the side stripe? Photoshopped examples...

One of the things I've been considering for my D now that I have it (woo hoo!) is adding the thick side stripe. However, I've always been bothered by the thickness of it and how it doesn't match up with the size of the bumper. So I asked my resident photoshop expert (the wife) to try a couple versions for me to see what the stripe might look like thicker. I'm definitely liking the version that matches up with the bumper... and I was very surprised that I kind of liked the version that extends to the rocker panels and almost makes it a two-tone car. Admittedly, I got that idea by one of the Hot Wheels toys that had the picture like that.

Thoughts / opinions? I searched but didn't find anybody else that had this same thought or tried it, but I'm sure I'm not the only person who's had this thought...

Oh, and here's the same picture with the original side stripe for easy comparison...

I'm not trying to make this into another side-stripe debate as we've had those before here... although I guess we are about due for another.
Have you considered making the stripe thinner instead? Personally I've never been a fan of the side-stripe but I have seen a small pinstripe-like mod that didn't look too bad. It was more of a grey than black, which I thought looked better against the stainless anyways.

I didn't find a lot of debate on this when I searched... is this a tired topic? Sorry if it is.
I tried a quick version of the thinner stripe actually, and I didn't like it personally. I didn't try it gray though... I'll try it, although like I said, I like the look of it connecting aesthetically with the bumper so it being gray will break that up.

I recall participating in one or two in the past couple of years. No big deal... I was more or less saying it in good humor.

personally, im not a fan of the lower black side stripe. that said, looking at the mockups i like the 1st one the best. extends the stripe to match the widths of the black part of the bumpers but still has that smaller lower black stripe to give it a bit of flair.
all solid makes it look too chunky/blocky.
Good work on the Photoshop job, rileydawgg!
#4 reminds me of the DeLorean that was black on top and copper from the side trim down. I'm sure I have a picture somewhere, although I can't seem to find it at the moment. Think inverted on-end Duracell battery.

all solid makes it look too chunky/blocky.Ditto. Looks much better when it matches the bumper height.
personally, im not a fan of the lower black side stripe. Not ditto -- I'm personally a fan of the side stripes (and occasionally think about one for 559), but to each his own.

Truthfully I am not a fan of the wider stripe; especially the one that covers the area below the side trim. Looks way too much like a 2 tone fiero...

Honestly I've always liked the idea of a double stripe going down the center if the car; curious how it would look.

I've seen somebody do the center stripes somewhere in my googling of side stripes. I'll see if I can find it... it definitely looked weird to me.
On a Fiero note, the sitting position with the big console is probably the most familiar feeling of sitting in a DeLorean that I've experienced albeit a bit more cramped. But one thing I will say for those cars... the speakers in the seat headrests were pretty cool.
i wouldn't mind bigger side stripes. Its mostly because there's a dent on the driver side door that is super conspicuous because of the door shine. Side stripes would probably make it a lot less obvious.

Is SpecialTauto / DeLorean Auto Parts the only vendor currently selling the side stripes? I suppose next step is getting them made...!

The side stripe is weird to me - I always hate it in pictures but when I see it in person on a real car, it's fantastic.

I quite agree, they look much better in person.
I can easily get a set of larger width stripes made up in a couple of days.
The other option is to make the main thick part of the stripe the same width of the black part of the bumper and then the smaller stripe below could be in grey/silver to match the lover part of the bumper.
Can someone mock that up? I'm on iPad at the moment.
I can easily get these made at a very good price as my friend is a sign writer and has done many sets for me before, often with subtle modifications.
Indeed he has done 15 sets this week.

I'll see if I can mock that up... not sure it'll be what I'm looking for, but might be interesting to see. And I am definitely interested in a quote if your friend could give me one. Would he be able to match the material with the grain?

Well I've had enough bits made to safely say that they can be made and sent stateside for max £80 and the dollar is pretty good against the £pound at the moment.
As for matching the grain... I have a source for oem style grain material but it proved very problematic to cut so I ditched it and now just go with Matt black.

That's definitely a good price. I'm waiting for a quote from a local place, but if they don't come through then I may take you up on your offer.

With the thicker wide stripe I would be tempted to add 'DeLorean' beneath the 3d DMC logo to better fill the space.
(Note I said max £80.00)
I'm going to get them to run one of these off.

I like all the examples above but I like the one Hervey's Special T sells.
I put some on 4915 and it looks great. The material is thick and
I expect it to last a long time.

Yeah, he recreates what was the original dealer option really well... but I'm looking for something slightly different.

I'd go with the first pic. I was messin' around w/ Fireworks and here's my like... "Fade or Blur" or "Gradient" in graphic terms...

Hmmm... I think that's actually pretty interesting. Never thought of that. A little Chip Foose-ish.

Oooooh I like that fade effect, might be tricky to replicate in vinyl.
I did think about a large black stripe as per oem, then about 4 ever thinning strips below to about half way down the panels, a sort of 80's fade technique lol, very apt.
I'm holding off making anything yet, there are some good ideas floating round on here.

I think if the maker lays black fade/ gradient, solid to fade top to bottom, on a clear (clear tape, clear laminate like) adhesive - it be done :)

It's very faint shadow around the edges. Bottom to top side to side. Light gray gradient on clear.

I love me some third gen Camaros, and of the striping packages GM offered the 85-87 Z28 always struck me as the most 80's looking. There is one black stripe at the bottom followed by a series of body color accent stripes that grew thinner in size and lighter in color.
Here's a photo for reference:
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=30836&d=1410900785
Translate that to a DeLorean in terms of styling and I think it would look something like this:
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=30834&d=1410900760
Or solid black version without the fade from black to silver:
http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=30835&d=1410900760
Or with a greater amount of gradient/fade to silver:

I was positive I wouldn't like this effect on a DeLorean... but seeing it on the car I think I kind of dig it, and probably the first version too. Cool

This is just what I was trying to suggest in an earlier post, very 80's, thanks for the photo shop mock ups
