This is going to sound really dumb, but here goes anyway.

My rearview broke off this morning. From the looks of the glue on it, its happened before and was repaired. The mount is still on the windshield, so I need to remove that.

Is there something special about the DMC replacement mirror, or will any ol' mirror work? Im not being cheap, but there is a $9 one on Amazon with good reviews, free 2 day prime. If there is something super special about the DMC repro, then I will drop the $44 plus shipping for the new one, but if not, Ill grab something cheaper.

You MUST NOT glue the mirror directly to the glass. The metal plate is attached to the glass with a special glue pad and then the mirror is attached to the metal plate. If you glue the plate directly to the glass you can crack the glass.

Is there a trick to removing the old mirror mount?

Warm it up with a hair dryer, and use a thin paint scraper. Go slow. BUT it depends on how it's held on. If it's the factory style tape, it will generally come right off if you warm it up. If the mirror is glued, heat will also help but I've seen them pull the glass out. Probably cracked already though.

Yeah my PO replaced the windshield and glued it. I now have a long vertical crack from the mount to the dash that occurred during the summer heat. Didn't happen for 15 years, but it happened.

This one has a black square in between the mirror and windshield. I felt it with my fingernail, but it doesnt seem very thick.

The black square is a paint-type surface on the glass. The mirror pad is slightly smaller than the mirror base. Just warm it up and go slow.

Is there something special about the DMC replacement mirror, or will any ol' mirror work? For what it's worth, my DeLorean has had a mirror "never used in DeLorean production" for the past 31 years (it's a generic installed at a QAC) with no issues other than not being able to see the whole rear window in one glance (which may be a problem with the OEM one -- never had the chance to check an OEM size!). Generic will work fine, although I just bought a couple used "homelink" variants off eBay to act as a garage door opener, but that's a topic for a different thread.

So yes, any generic automotive mirror will work

Yeah I sure would like homelink. I have a gate and a garage

Yeah I sure would like homelink. I have a gate and a garageAs long as you install any mirror "the right way" this time (i.e. with the pad), you can remove it down the road for a homelink. Right now my package is en route, so I won't have any further details until I get it in, but I will say this: I've found it incredibly useful in my daily driver, but not worth the full retail price of a new one ($300+ when I checked last week). Used ones on eBay (search for "home link") go for around $30 or more, so theoretically you could buy and burn your way through ten before you justify the cost of a new one. That was all it took for me to try out that route, although I'm not sure if there's extra equipment I need or not. I just bought a couple from sellers who took them off of parts cars.

I just dealt with this myself. I bought the new mirror, just because I'm picky like that. I have my old used one here, mount and all. PM me an offer on it.
