View Full Version : General Large amount of wear on CV joints

Finally got around to rebuilding the CV joints on both driveshafts. All went smoothly save for the last one. There was some serious wear and it has me concerned. Both the inner race and outer race show significant damage, there is pitting on the inner race. Its hard to see from the pictures, but the outer race wear is rather deep. The bearings all look to be okay, albeit a little more dull than the other sets. My assumption is that this is bad, and I'm going to need to replace the parts in question. Are there available part numbers for what I would need to replace here, or am I stuck buying a whole new driveshaft from a DeLorean vendor?

I have no idea what location this joint was, driver/passenger, wheel/transmission (if that is even useful diagnostic info), nor do I know the history of the joint. I am the third owner and it sounds like the owner before me MAY have done it, but I am unsure. The grease in this join was very thick and chunky, two of the other three joints were about the same, the other joint was much more runny. The pitting on the inner race makes me think of overheating, either the grease broke down or wasn't enough. Can anyone confirm what might have happened here?

That's what they look like when driven for a few years with the rubber CV boot torn or missing.

Interesting. I only drove it a hundred miles or so after I bought it, since then its been sitting there while I rebuild it as a side project. Don't remember the status of the boots as the driveshafts came off a long time ago.

I've gotten the impression from a few people that its not terrible damage and is still pretty drivable, but should be replaced if possible. Is there any way to easily source the parts that need replacing?

Parts car part. If you leave it the way it is, it won't get worse, but you'll have some excess slop in the joint and you will hear/feel it.

Could easily have been that the PO replaced damaged boots, but not damaged CV or completely removed old grease, so the boots maybe looked OK when you took them off (hence you not remembering anything ripped)

as an aside, I was wondering if your car is lowered or has non-standard sized rear wheels?

It is indeed possible, I have left the PO a message asking if he remembered anything about it, but I have yet to hear back

It is a non-stock suspension. I believe it is the Eibach/SPAX combo, but I would have to dig through the two inch thick history folder that has been maintained on the car. It is definitely lower than stock. Why do you ask?

I was just wondering if the greater angle if it had been lowered was affecting wear in the joints. But I would have expected it to be in two if them, not just one.

But I don't think Spax alone affect the ride height.

Just FYI, to my knowledge the DeLorean CV joints are identical to the Porsche 911/930 108mm CV joints. You can buy them all day long on ebay, brand new and used.

Holy shit. Thats good to know. Does there exist a real and in-depth cross-reference list of replacement parts? I feel this would be something stupidly useful, and if not, I would certainly be okay with spearheading a maintained list.

*EDIT* Made a new thread asking about this, and to see if anyone is interested: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?10671-Does-a-master-list-of-cross-reference-parts-exist

Ah, 7 pages of mashed together information, with general conversation spliced in the middle.

I am talking a real website, that is solely for the purpose of cross-reference parts, with a list of all delorean parts, numbers, cross references, estimated pricing, etc. Or hell, even a complete doc that lists everything.

Haha, no problem. I thought this was a little bit more common knowledge. Always surprised me when people acted like CV joints were unavailable, or worth their weight in gold :what_the:

Just in case anyone is curious, here's the info:

The term CV joint is short for constant velocity joint. These Porsche 930 CV joints are found on independent suspension axles IRS or IFS. They measure about 108mm in diameter, 40mm thick, and have a 28 spline center. This CV Joint Originally came stock on a Porsche 911 Turbo from 1975 to 1989. The Porsche 911 Turbo is better known in the community as the Porsche 930. Porsche 930 CV's are used in the off-road community because they are larger in diameter than beetle or bus CV joints. Since Porsche 930 CV's are larger in diamater they support more horsepower and allow for more angle on the axle. More angle translates into more suspension wheel travel. The Porsche 930 CV joint was designed for a 10mm bolt. We offer several different grades of the Porsche 930 CV that range from stock GKN German, to EMPI Chinese, to American Pro-Am and Kartek fully race CV joints.

This Porsche 911 Turbo / Porsche 930 CV Joint will fit the following years:
1975 1983
1976 1984
1977 1985
1978 1986
1979 1987
1980 1988
1981 1989
1982

I have a set of DeLorean axles on a shelf in my garage for a rainy day. Here are a few photos I just took of the dimensions of one of the DeLorean CV Joints.

Just be sure to stay within the model years listed. If you go earlier, you'll end up with much smaller CV joints. I made the mistake of clicking "buy it now" once on ebay without fully reading the description, while buying a CV joint cap & boot (wasted $8.00). Turned out to be from a '65. They're smaller in diameter and use M8 bolts instead of M10s. Here's a photo of it next to the correct size. Isn't it cute?! :P

You can buy them from this website (one website of MANY) for $52 each brand new:
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PC&Product_Code=porsche930cv-empi-1&Category_Code=lobro-gkn

This site has them in all different types and materials. You can even go crazy and get "race ready ones" (for ~$100) that are a higher strength material and lightened (not really necessary on our cars but still cool!)
3086830869

You can also find them all over ebay for $50 each, or even less if you buy them in sets of 4.

Didn't realize I was keeping secrets, haha. Definitely dont pay parts car prices or premiums under the assumption of the part being no longer available. Far from it! They're literally making new ones every day!:thumbup::thumbup:

Yup, had no clue. Information is hard to find on a forum, or on the internet when trying to find something compatible with a 30 year old car. This is why I would like to see a much more complete and in-dept cross-ref list. I already picked up the one from Josh and it has already shipped out. I will totally hang on to it because I like supporting what hes been doing, but I will certainly remember this for future references.

Got ya; well I guess at least Josh is stocking them  Wish I had seen this sooner. I'd have sold you one of the used ones I have on my shelf for significantly less. They have virtually no wear, I'd just like to eventually get a really nice set of new ones to swap out.

I like the USA versions of these manufactured in the south. Same company that makes our drive flanges and axle shafts. I could also start stocking the cheaper alternative as well for less in the future but have always taken the best route on everything offered at DPI.

If you would like for me to recall the package and go with the economical route that is fine. I appreciate the patronage regardless!

It started as one mans list, with a request for others to add to it, hence the thread.

I don't think anyone has bothered condensing it, never mind creating a website, probably because of this

because I like supporting what hes been doing,

Most of the parts and pieces we need are available from DMCx/DPI/Hervey/PJgrady at reasonable prices, so why not just buy from them.

Granted, it is useful to have a list of parts that might be available from Autozone etc in an emergency (such as the Eagle starter), but as their stock is constantly changing, someone needs to keep the list updated.

Not to dissuade you from starting one, just some thoughts as to why it hasn't been done.

You do bring up a good point here. I would certainly want to include the main resources in the list if I did go ahead with it. But I can only imagine there are people out there who either do not know where every part would be available from, or if its available at all.

The problem is that I come from the electronics industry. I am used to troves of datasheets, part search utilities, price comparison utilities, being able to go to a distributor and telling them what I am looking for and have them give me a list of parts to meet my needs, getting EOL notices that include drop in replacement parts, the whole industry using common naming when they make a common part under their own name. Every time I have to look up something for the D, I spend hours searching, digging through forums, hoping someone might know, and generally just end up extremely frustrated due to the lack of any organized material.

Quick question. Are the joints in the axles exactly the same on both ends (trans side and hub side)?

Yes they are identical on both ends. In fact on that same website, you could buy their super strong axles to go between the CV joints on your delorean. Just buy the 21" axles. Only thing is that since the axle shafts are a bigger diameter, you'll have to buy their special wider boots. Not worth it yet for me. I like being able to get stock boots for ~$8 new.

Well just got done rebuilding my rear axles. One axle had a lot of play, both boots were torn wide open and I heard a loud clicking noise in the rear (on that side) on tight turns in reverse. The other axle looked ok, no play, boots looked fine. So I ordered 4 new boot kits from DMCMW and rebuilt the "good axle". I completely cleaned the grease out and checked everything (looked real good) thanks to the walk through in the "How to section". It went together beautifully. On the other side I had to replace the joints, I went with the one's you put the link up for (EMI's) @ $51.00 ea. Perfect! Fit dead on and could'nt have been easier. After completely rebuilding the one side just replacing the others was a snap. Thanks again. If anyone is thinking about doing it the replacement joints are plug and play. SWEET!

Hi Kris,

Don't take this personally but were any of your balls damaged? ;) The scoring on a couple of journals is particularly heavy and is unusual even with a torn boot unless something very hard and abrasive got in there. I,ve seen the balls in a wheel bearing actually split in two before but not a CV bearing. In any case I recommend replacing it and we do sell individual CV bearing assemblies if you want one. If so please call our 800 # as we don't have much in the way of parts up on our new webesite yet.

No, no balls showed damage; and trust me, they were thoroughly inspected.

The bearings themselves all looked okay, and only looked more dull than they were om other joints. The races were the only part the showed damage. I have since replaced the whole joint.

Nicholas R

The balls are through hardened .875" (7/8) standard bearing balls. If you need replacements, you can always get them from a place like McMaster. I think it would be about $22 to replace all of the balls.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#9528k32/=u3sbuo

You can also get slightly undersized balls (.873") which can allow your joints to move a little more freely. This is especially good if you're constantly operating at an extreme angle.
