This is a spinoff from Jonathan's thread here: http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?10658-Car-show-amp-cruise-night-entrant-s-fee
Here's what I think is a good example of how to have an event without charging anybody:
Last week there was a Car Hop in my town, it was well publicized and held on both sides of the main road on the edge of town. It's the only "car show" type
event I went to; a friend of mine was there with a Cordoba, and it was a mile away so it was highly convenient as well. It wasn't anything big but everyone seemed to have a good time.
-No entrance or admission fees.
-The cars parked on one side in the parking lot of a bodyshop.
-Everything else was on the opposite side in the parking lot of an ice cream place/restaurant.
-A retired cop is hired to direct vehicle & pedestrian traffic.
-DJ for music & announcements.
-Various different awards for the cars.
-Free raffles
-50/50 raffles
-Free caricture paintings for 2 hours.
-A few local vendor booths.
-A nearby town has a "Rum Runners" event that weekend; two carloads of prohibition re-enactors arrive and perform a skit with shooting, ass-kicking and
screaming women to promote their event.
-The few expenses that actually exist are funded by the local business alliance... win-win.
In short, hold an event on the property of [and draw a crowd for] local businesses and there's no need charge anyone jack.
