Just collected a fairly tidy car but I have seen an alarming number of burnt out cars on google images. Is there a common electrical issue I should be checking for? Perhaps the fires are due to petrol leaks, I have no idea but I would be delighted to hear any tips to look out for. Regards Stuart

What have you been searching to come across these images exactly??? It's quite rare that a DeLorean catches on fire, usually it's just dry-rotted fuel lines or something of that nature, not electrical issues. Electrical issues usually don't manifest as fire, just blown fuses and such. What's the history of this car? VIN, storage, mods, work history, etc. all help pinpoint potential issues and what to look out for.

I know when I search "DeLorean" on Google Images, I only see prime examples of our cars. Seriously, there seems to be a lot of misconception from this one post, and has me wondering how you came across it all... :umm:

Thanks for your reply, I was looking for one to buy and found a couple of fire damaged cars, I then searched delorean fire and loads came up. I was told by the previous owner that the fuse box was a common fault but he had replaced it. GRP cars like the Lotus Elan were famous for catching fire. Bad earths I imagine. Glad to hear you say that I have nothing to worry about. I hear that one Delorean caught fire due to the foam in the rear bumper catching fire I assume from the hot exhaust. Anyone with any advise please?

My advice: either visit a local vendor and tell them you're interested in DeLoreans but don't know where to start, or try to avoid buying one on a whim. If you go into ownership without much knowledge of the car, it won't be a good experience. Learn as much as you can before you buy a car. Vendors are a great place to start! :)

Most electrical problems are bad connection which produce heat and melt plastic. You would just want to sure your battery wires (all heavy gauge unfused) are not rubbing on any hot exhaust or sharp metal pars.

I think 95% of car fires are due to leaking fuel lines.

Sorry, just read my post, I did not make it clear. I have purchased a car, before I found it I had found fire pics but it seams I only have standard car issues to worry about. No worries about lack of fuses? My old Bond Bug has 4 fuses for the whole lot! I work in kit cars and have seen many poor wiring jobs.
I got locked in already! Sorted the locks now. Can anyone advise on the name of the drum unit fora drill and where to get one for a finish/clean up of the stainless please?
I am in Sherwood Forest in the UK
